Seeing a Liverpool failure score a hat-trick for a team managed by a Liverpool failure would be funny.

oh now i get you. as i was a cisse fan in the beginning and still held a tame flame for the chap, to the end, i'd rather he missed a hat-trick of chances so i'd know for sure we done the right thing in getting rid!!!

If he spent as much time on improving his game as he does on his hair he'd be better than Zidane !

Liverpool have been alerted to the availability of Argentina forward Pablo Aimar, who may be allowed to leave Valencia for as little as £5m. (The Times)

He's been a bit injury prone lately but if he could get back to his best for £5m he'd be an absolute bargain

you know i dont think i have ever seen this fall of the front page, anyway.

Liverpool are thinking about a move for Chelsea winger Damien Duff. (Star)

Liverpool are preparing a cut-price £3.8m bid for Fulham's Steed Malbranque (NoW).

If all these rumours are to be believed we will be overrun with wingers. We may have to start playing a few wingers up front!

Makes a change from playing our strikers as wingers, anyway!

Nah Duff is going to Spurs. At pool he would be a bench-warmer! (never thought I'd say that).

who would you prefer, malbranque or pennant?
they're both pretty cheap, pennant is younger and quicker, but i can't look past his disiplinary record

also, chelsea won't sell to liverpool

Looks like we can cross Malbranque off the rumors list - again  ... from:
    http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0500liverpoolfc/0100news/tm_objectid=17178972%26method=full%26siteid=50061%26headline=benitez%2dtips%2dkewell%2dto%2dstar-name_page.html
    * LIVERPOOL are not trying to sign Fulham's Steed Malbranque, despite weekend reports.

The right-midfielder is not on Reds boss Rafa Benitez's wanted list this summer.

Could of course be smoke - who knows ? Bascombe tends to be on the button rather than being fed bits n pieces when it suits the club/rafa

Well the Mirror are reporting that there is a new £4 million bid made for Pennant and that if they don't get an answer soon then Malbranque is back up!!

Not saying I don't want Pennant but your question is unreasonable. Pennant is going for cheap, so to list other players better than him at the same price is an unfair valuation of how good he is. There are better players than him but they cost more money. I'd rather a top class, proven winger for more money than Pennant for 4million.
I like that Benitez won't pay over the odds or splash out on a player but it can be frustrating to see him buy average players because they are cheaper. Maybe he thinks he can bring out the best in Pennant and if he signs him I'll give him a chance to impress but when Liverpool have been linked with the likes of Joaquin and Simao it's hard to be brought back down to the reality of Pennant.

Personally i would prefer to see Rafa spend big on a striker. We have cover at both wings when Gonzalez arrives, maybe we dont have a specialist RM per se, but we certaily have people who can do a really good job is a gamble does not pay off. With chelsea having spent big in that department, an area which they have not been prolific in over the last couple of seasons, then we also need someone who can play off crouchy or alongside god, somone who will hit 15+ per season in order to compete.

Pennant was a real hot prospect but has/had off-field problems, i understand that he wants to come to liverpool and we just need to sort out a transfer fee, but a lot depends on other leads. Besides if we do go ahead and spend big on Wackeen this, IMO is an even bigger gamble. I know people who have followed his career quite closely and they maintain that he would have real settling problems in England.

Why does it have to be for the same price? Better players cost more money.

Bacchus pretty much summed up my thoughts. Rafa has shown that he is a fantastic manager winning the CL and Fa cup, if Liverpool want to seriously challenge for the premiership/CL next season they are gonna need to splash out on a striker & right winger(IMO). For such a big club, I dont see why this seems to be such a problem. Obviously they are never going to have the money Chelsea have but its still frustrating...

With Cisse, Morientes, Kewell, Traore & possibly Krompkampf on their way out Liverpool can surely afford someone better than Pennant, no ?

i dont see liverpool or any big clubs bidding for any of they're primary targets until chelsea are done with their shopping. it makes no sence.

Pure speculation atm but the Guardian are reporting that Pape Diouf is on Merse yside trying to hammer out a deal for Cisse.
    http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,1791847,00.html

Price looks low at 7m and I would have thought it wiser to hold off till after the WC as it could boost his price by a couple of quid.

Djibril Cisse's move to Marseille is in trouble because the French club do not want to be involved in a bidding war for the unsettled Liverpool striker. (Various)

Would one of these feckin french teams please take that lazy frigger from us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭zing

At the moment there is no bidding war. Lyon has distanced themselves from a move:
    http://home.skysports.com/list.asp?hlid=392811&CPID=24&clid=14&lid=&title=Aulas+plays+down+Cisse+talk
Sky also reporting that Diouf is meeting with Parry & co. today

So atm it's a one horse race - which isn't good as it means the price is likely to remain low.

both l'om and lyon mentioned a loan deal...no more loan deals please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,661 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Personally I'd prefer to keep him as a squad player (cover for both wingers and strikers) than loan him out. In the last three months he showed many signs of improvement - I'd still sell him of course for any kind of decent offer, but a loan deal makes no sense to me

I think if given the right guidance (which is why I think Benitez played him as a sub alot last season) he will be a demon of a player!!
I think if no1 is willing to give 8mill+ for him then keep him and play him and get him scoring!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,225 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

benitez doenst want him, and i think cisse has burned his bridges with him, and is set on leaving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭woodyg

Cisse is gone, it's just a matter of who pay's the 8 million price. Liverpool are waiting to see the interest develop i.e. Lyonn and OLM and will then flog him.

Benitez doesn't like him as a player and i have a feeling he doesn't like him as a person after seeing him tryin to orgustrate a move away.
Benitez wont stand for anybody not pulling in the same direction as the rest of the squad. If a player be comes a disturbance to the harmony of the squad he will be shipped out the door with his tail between his legs.
    Just ask Milan Baros!

8milion for Cisse is reasonable enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,111 ✭✭✭joker77

Agreed, his name is John and he's gone.

Think Morientes should be shown the door as well, really don't know whether he will be though because Rafa really rates him, but the dogs on the street can see he's just not going to make it at Liverpool.

I think the transfer talk will just go quiet now till after the World Cup, then a flurry of activity

I didn't see it myself but I read that it was the same leg as before, the commentators reckon his career is over. Apparently there was blood everywhere and he was screaming while being stretchered off?

Really feel bad for him after coming back from it the first time :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

It was his other leg this time, not the same one.

(it was his right leg this time)

The board can forget about any money coming in, and leave him on the payroll for now

Thanks for the link lizardking, didn;t get to see the game last night. But like PHB said it really is nasty.

Was barely a tackle involved in it, his studs just seemed to stick, his leg just buckled under the weight. Hopefully its not career ending for him.

Its really really sad...regardless of his attitude of performances for Liverpool, absolutely noone deserves that. ( Bar maybe Gary Neville )

    Liverpool Echo
RAFA BENITEZ today admitted Djibril Cisse's latest horrific injury will impact on his summer spending plans.

The Liverpool manager was banking on raising as much as £8m from the sale of Cisse to Marseille or Lyon, with talks reaching an advanced stage just hours before the striker suffered a broken leg in France's last warm-up game.

Cisse suffered a break of the tibia and fibula, ruling him out until at least Christmas, and ending the possibility of an imminent sale.

While Benitez has sympathy for the 25-year-old, from a business perspective the injury has serious repercussions.

Hopes of raising capital to launch bids for certain targets depended on the early sale of players such as Cisse.

Now Benitez must re-assess his options, and may even have to re-consider the futures of other saleable assets to ensure he's not frustrated with his summer re-building plans.

"There are two issues here," said Benitez.

"Firstly, from the players point of view I'm really sorry for Djibril. That's important. It's really unfortunate for him. But it's true it's now impossible for him to be sold.

"We were expecting to sell him to Marseille or Lyon and planned using the money for other players. We were talking to both clubs. Now we won't have this money. We won't expect him to play again until November or December."

However, Benitez insists there will be no problem for manager and player working together next season, despite it being made clear Cisse was being sold.

"It was a professional decision and we were honest with Djibril. There will be no problem when he comes back," added Benitez.

Seville's Daniel Alves - who Benitez hopes to sign imminently - and Feyenoord's Dirk Kuyt are Benitez's prime targets, with another striker, likely to be either Darren Bent or Craig Bellamy, also in the manager's sights.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool boss also believes goalkeeper Chris Kirkland should only be allowed to leave Anfield for a fee, despite the fact Wigan sources claim an agreement has already been reached to sign the keeper on loan for the whole season.

january transfer possibly but it won't do anything to increase his price. i dont know how benitez can work some magic now. maybe keep him til next summer. after reading the above article i only realised how bad this is for the club, let alone the player. :(

You can almost feel the chain reactions kicking in. We now have £8mil less to play with. This means at least one of the major transfers is off probably Simao. We will now move for Pennant post haste.
It also remains to be seen what we will do about strikers now that we have one extra hangin around. Will we bring in two as was previously the case? Or just one, in which case will we make a generous "Sell him now" offer to Feyenoord for Kuyt?
Id imagine Rafa might start to look at other players in the squad and think "I wonder" as regards a sale.....
