The UK Open starts on Thursday with matches being shown live on Sky Sports. This is basically the FA Cup of darts where there are loads of upsets as smaller players beat the big guns. There have been a series of tournaments throughout the year to decide who qualifies for this tournament. Many county and pub players are getting a chance to play against the big guns. It's played on a number of boards in the Reebok stadium, Bolton, with most matches being played like floor matches with their only being a few main "stage" boards.

If a player is a good floor tournament player the chances are he will do well in this tournament so I think Mick McGowan has a great chance to do well. Mick is pretty highly rated on the tour and is being tipped by many to break into the top 8 soon enough. I think this tournament will suit him and he doesn't come into it until Round 4 so he should be able to avoid most of the dangerous pub and county players. Let's hope he does well.

Other names to look out for are Colin Osbourne and Andy Hamilton, who are both storming up the rankings. The likes of Mervyn King and Jelle Klaasen are also playing. Tony Eccles is playing in his first PDC tournament since switching from the BDO.

Here is the draw for the first three rounds:
    http://www.planetdarts.tv/page/UKOpenDetail/0,,10180~1025177,00.html

The big name in the first round is Michael Van Gerwen. Coverage starts tomorrow (Thursday) night at 7pm on Sky Sports.

Who do you think will do well in the tournament?

yeah good point on mick mcgowan i remember him playing taylor in the last world championship and he averaged 102 i think, but taylor beat him 3-1 with a 107 average so mick certainly has the game to go very far.

as for another irish dart player hopefully garreth gray "chalky" does well as he just lives a few doors up from me, very nice chap and with a bit more tv experience can have a great future in the game.

I personally think john part is going to have a good tornament if he hits his doubles on his day he can beat anyone 33/1 with PP!and 66/1 scholten he won a tornament last week so thats a good each way bet.or is it:rolleyes: ????

Yeah if you're a betting man (like I am) then this is definitely the tournament to do it because you can get huge odds on top players. I have a bet on Mick McGowan @ 42.0, Colin Osbourne @ 42 and Andy Hamilton @ 23.

Betfair are offering crazy odds like Wayne Mardle @ 70.0 and Ronnie Baxter @ 90.0

I didn't realise Gray was taking part in this. Hope he does well.

Good night's darts last night this is an interesting format. Was good to watch the varying techniques, some very different actions on show. I might try a few of them :D

The only shock last night, if you can even say it was a shock, was Ray Carver losing his first match. He is a decent player so a little surprising. Van Gerwen cruised through easily. I'm surprised that he is not playing on the main board tonight, thought they would have him on TV.

Looking forward to tonight because it's when the big players start coming into it. Let's hope both Gareth Gray and Brendan Dolan can win through.

EDIT: It looks like both Gray and Dolan will be shown live on Sky. Gray at about 7pm and Dolan at about 11pm. Good stuff.

Garrett Gray is now the joint favourite at 5/6 after being 13/8 earlier on the day. There is a lot of money being put on him to win. Lets hope he can do it.

Great night for the Irish lads last night. Roland Scholten v James Wade
    Dennis Smith v Colin Lloyd
    Wayne Mardle v Denis Ovens

    Board Three
    Kevin Painter v Nigel Birch
    Kevin McDine v Alan Green
    Wayne Jones v Garry Spedding
    Darren Johnson v Brendan Dolan

    Board Four

    Steve Hine v Alan Tabern
    Richie Burnett v Jelle Klaasen
    Colin Osborne v Steve Maish

    Board Five

Should be a great match alright, both are quality players and if things go well either one of them could win the whole thing. I'm slightly favouring Merv to win this by 2 legs but it could go all the way. Great day of darts ahead :D

If a player is a good floor tournament player the chances are he will do well in this tournament so I think Mick McGowan has a great chance to do well.

I agree with this and i think these sort of conditions what with other matches in progress simultaneously will hinder priestly. Also i think Priestly isnt in the same sort of good form he was in for much of the darts league on sky tv so i think McGowan has an edge.

And Taylor hits another nine darter in the UK Open. Was a close match until then and then Taylor just ran away with it winning 11-5.

Good game too with Colin Osbourne and Michael Van Gerwen with Osbourne winning that one.

Amazingly he is still available at 64/1 on betfair.

Great day of darts yesterday with some really thrilling matches. Unlucky that the Irish lads didn't progress but fair play to Dolan for reaching Round 5. Barney against Part was a real battle with the lead changing 8 times. I really wanted Part to win that but fair play to Barney. Lloyd against Painter and Osbourne against King were two other great games. I must say I really love the format of this tournament, so many great matches and shocks along the way.

So the quarter final draw has been made:
    Board One
Vincent van der Voort v Terry Jenkins
Raymond van Barneveld v Phil Taylor

    Board Two
    Colin Osborne v Alan Green
    Colin Lloyd v Steve Hine
    Best of 21 legs

    Semi Final will be:
    Semi-Finals (Main Stage)
    van der Voort/Jenkins v Osborne/Green
    van Barneveld/Taylor v Lloyd/Hine
    Best of 21 legs

Obviously Barney against Taylor is the standout match. Barney has been struggling a little bit against Taylor recently but Barney beat Taylor in this competition last year 11-10 so he is well capable of doing it. I expect Osbourne to win through against Alan Greene. Greene is a steady player but Osbourne is quality and he could easily win this competition. Steve Hine has done brilliantly to get this far but I can't see him getting past Lloyd who looked good beating Painter yesterday. Van Der Voort against Jenkins is a good match. VdV is very inconsistant but on his day he is a cracking player and can easily average in the hundreds, same goes for Jenkins so I think it will be close this one. Many people are saying an easy win for Jankins but I don't think so.

Looking forward to another top day of darts :D

What a great win by Barney as he beats Taylor 11-4. I can't remember Taylor ever been beating by so much before.

Colin Lloyd wins through too, as did Vincent Van Der Voort and Colin Osbourne who play each other.

Great to see Barney back into some good form. He dipped terribly in the Premier League towards the end of it.

He was on fire in the early running against Van Der Voort, averaging a 112 at one stage

Delighted for him, hopefully he can carry that form all the way to Dublin in October. Would love to see him at the top of his game, and hopefully meeting Taylor in the final.....what a night that would be!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,290 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Yeah fair play to Barney, he was the best player over the weekend and deserved the win. Fair play to VvD as well, no one expected him to get to the final in his first televised PDC tournament. I would have liked to see someone other than Taylor or Barney win the tournament but it wasn't to be.

Next up is the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
