mobile network broadband question

A few companies are now offering broadband via the mobile phone network. Is there any offering the equavalent of pay as you go?

For example, they could charge EUR 0.05 per MB up to a max of say EUR 50 per month. This would allow people who only want to use it every so often to use the service (like say when they are traveling). Obviously, the user would have to buy the modem up-front.

Also, presumably with the monthly version of the service, you can use it if you travel around the country ?

What about international "roaming" ? I assume that is a no-no.

It would also allow people to keep their broadband connection during transitions. In fact, perhaps that would be a good way for alternative providers to bypass the slow Eircom handovers (offer a mobile link for the few weeks of the transition). The mobile modem could be sent with the user's new DSL modem and they would have to send it back when the DSL line is enabled.

International roaming can be very expensive.

    AKAIK it's contract only.

You can use a phone as a modem:
    single GSM 14k
    Dual GSM 28k
    GPRS 56k
    3G 384k
    HSDPA 3500k

Not all phones and all networks offer all modes. Few phones offer HSDPA. You can easily drop to GSM based GPRS coverage even on 3G.

Speeds are maximum. For HSDPA, it is the peak speed with a good signal and one person in the cell. With 10 people you may get less than 300kbps. With 25 people you may only get GPRS or no connection.

Moved IoffL > Broadband (for general discussion, rather than mobile-specific?)

the problem with having access to the full internet for pre-paid is that there is no traceability to the identity of the end user in the case of illega use / abuse.

Also, like any broadband package currently, you need to sign a contract, pay a fixed monthly fee, you have a set amount of included usage, pay via DD/Credit Card, and they have you name, address and details on file.

    There is no difference
