VAG confuse the life out of people with their TDi badges.

I'm open to correction here but afaik this is the way it goes:

    VW Passat 1997 - 2001
    1.9 TDi - 90bhp
    1.9 TDi - 110bhp

    VW Passat 2002 - 2004
    1.9 TDi - 100bhp PD
    1.9 TDi - 130bhp PD

    VW Passat 2004 - 2005
    1.9 TDi - 100bhp PD
    1.9 TDi - 130bhp PD

    Audi A4 2001 - 2004
    1.9 TDi - 100bhp
    1.9 TDi - 130bhp PD

    Audi A4 2004 - 2007
    1.9 TDi - 115bhp PD
    2.0 TDi - 140bhp
    2.0 TDi - 170bhp

Edit... silly question. What is the highest BHP golf in Deisel?

Thanks Bazz. Thought they might make something beefier.

Edit... just read your edit! The 150 must be quick, have the new GTi at the moment, it DRINKS petrol with a surfboard on the roofrack! Maybe time to rethink...

Not sure if the 2.0 TDi can be chipped.

The new Passat is available with a 170bhp version of the 2.0 TDi also.

VW have a Golf GT too, it's a 1.4 TFSi, it has a turbo and supercharger, pumps out 170bhp. Not sure what it is like on petrol. About €5k cheaper than the GTi.

I would be terrified to chip a new car! I really want to stick with the hatch... Thanks for your help though. Much appreciated.

PD = Pump-Duse. This is a different type of injection system to the older TDi units.

A lot of the time the dealers just throw on whatever badges they find. I'd go by the sticker in the boot tbh. The PD130 model has a 6-speed gearbox, if you've only got 5 then it's more than likely the 100bhp model.

Ah I dunno, I've seen a fair few of them around the place in Cork. Any idea how many horsepowers or torques they are putting out?

That would be the 150 bhp version of the Mk IV Golf TDI.

As for the passat, before the car was facelifted in 2001, there was a 1.9 TDI with PD technology and 115 bhp. PD stands for Pumpe Düse and is German for Pump Jet, but refers to the fact that the PD models boast an individual injector for each cylinder more commonly known as Unit Injection. After the car was facelifted, the TDI badge refered to either the 100 bhp or 130 bhp version.

The Golf GT TDi is a UK only model. Any you see here are UK imports or just have fake badges stuck on. The GT TDi is basically a diesel with the same suspension set up, trim and spec as the standard Golf GTi. The closest model sold in Ireland was the Highline spec.

There were a couple of different GT TDi versions also:

    Golf GT TDi - 130bhp
    Golf GT TDi - 150bhp

No, that was never in the passat. They put that 115 into the golf then as the first GT TDi before they went with the 130 and 150 models in England.

Really, the whole tdi badge thing is just so silly. VW Ireland just went to town on it with various colours.

What's the story with a TDI, see them about on Passats.

More than likely a fake badge stuck on. The highest powered 1.9 TDi available in the B5 Passat was 130bhp which wore the TDi badge for a while afaik.

The MKV golf GT comes in the 2.0 TDI 170 engine.

As does the Seat Altea FR Tdi, the SEAT Leon FR TDi , and the Skoda Vrs Tdi.

Think they all have red lettering.

Jaaaaaaysus! They can't keep it simple!

The golf GT with the two litre engine 170bhp sounds interesting...

    Thanks people.

I think the UK had the 115BHP Passat too Tdi I only ever saw them in Northern Ireland, a friend of mine bought one new, would have been sometime in year 2000 !
