    hi all

stumped here...bear in mind I 'm an electronics moron
and the schematics are killing me,

I am building an a/b-y as my first project
(its a stompbox that switched channels on a guitar amp
the "y" is both on at the same time)

I did as much homework as i could, but am really new to this, even basic soldering is new to me,

i have this open style dc in jack:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...%20DC&doy=10m6

but cant make sense of the symbol in the schematic i'm using, just click the image at the top right to enlarge (i didnt buy the kit but used the partslist when buying my components)
    http://www.musikding.de/product_info...c7d56e399fe6a3

can anyone steer me in the right direction as to which
wires go to which pins ,

also on the input stereo jack: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...0jack&doy=10m6

the schematic has me here as well, are the black wire going to the two short pins around the "neck" of the jack?

any sites around to help me get started with reading schematics
    and soldering lessons/tips

    any advice welcome,

    thanks

uuum you might wanna repost those links cause one 404's and the other two dont show the right thing..

so all I can offer you is some basic advice, the coaxial style wire will have center core and a second stranded copper wire wrapping around the outside, the outside one is the guard to prevent inteference like phones etc and that will also be the earth. its going to go to the body of the jack or the big prong, not either of the small ones. also it wont really matter which way you wire to the smaller prongs. itl just go a/b instead of b/a. not a problem on a channel selector.
change the links and you might get more specific help.

as for basic soldering help, if possible put the solder to the wire and hold against the body you are attaching it to, then heat it form the opposite side, if the componant isnt too thick, its much cleaner. also dont overheat stuff cause that makes things like switches die. if you balls it up, let it cool down before going again. and dont buy super cheap solder, you'll regret it.

ok it 3am and im not really being too clear so ill try again tomorrow
