I bought the Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 320GB USB2.0 about 8 months ago, its been running since and I think its a good buy, runs cool and quiet, powers up and down with the PC and looks good in an understated way.

I'm actually buying the 500 GB version at the mo :)

    They're stackable too.

I think everyone in college has a WD MyBook, great drive, great price and very quiet. Avoid external enclosures unless you want to take the HD out later on, as those little fans are noisy and cheap enclosures will fry your drive.

EDIT: If you plan to stick it on a desk, get the mybook. I got a 120GB passport for bringing work and large files from home to college. Very small and no bulky PSU needed.

++ support for WD Mybook. I have two firewire versions, a 250gb and a 500gb. Both run great.

I've got 2 of the MyBooks, 1x300gb & 1x500gb. Never had any problems with them and planning on getting a 1tb MyBook soon.
