An Bord Pleanála has given the go-ahead for the construction of a massive IKEA outlet in the Ballymun area of Dublin.

Legal restrictions on the size of retail developments had already been changed to allow the Swedish furniture giant to build a 30,000 square foot shop in the area.

However, several objections were received from the National Roads Authority, Green Party TD Eamon Ryan and a number of businesses which said they would be adversely affected by a huge increase in traffic on the M50 motorway.

An Bord Pleanála has now decided to grant permission for the project, subject to 30 conditions aimed at preventing traffic congestion, protecting the visual amenity of the area and promoting sustainable development.

Nice timing with the "deal" between the greens and FF.:D

Glad I moved from that area. Maybe the store will open after midnight. Do we really need this? A few decent schools in the area would have been more appropriate. Bit late in the day though.

    Money talks...

Thats fairly small compared to what they were originally looking for..

I remember reading an article a few years back when they originally started
looking at setting up in Ireland and figures of 35,000 sq metres were quoted
which would have been a completely obscene size.. thats like an 8 acre
development.. I doubt that it would have been on building but it would truely
dwarf any other single retail unit in the county!!!
