I would (have) buy a 99 Audi A8 4.2 quattro for €14,000, and put the rest away for servicing/fuel/tax.:)

I would feel utterly shafted if I parted with €30,000 and got ... that.;)

    An e46 BMW M3 or a Mazda RX-8

I'm currently building a full John Cooper Works MINI Cooper S for about that money. Engine, brakes, suspension, dash, body styling, steering wheel, seats, all straight from the JCW tuning house, and a high spec donor car to begin with. Should be putting out about 250Bhp when I'm done, no back seats, black all over, and a very serious technology install that I'm buying parts for at the mo.

You can't come out with that and not post up photos and the like! Sounds amazing... What colour is it going to be? What a project.

    I take it your single?

Edit: Just read your post properly.. Black all over!

Brand new it's not owing the dealer much more than €30k so I'm sure I could get someone below the magic figure

I'd spend the other five grand on hookers.

The Liffey Valley incident is one thing that's putting me off.
That, and the whole parting with €30,000 bit :(

Don't worry, I have a backup (which I could park in Liffey Valley anytime :p )

Gatster; I like your thinking!!! I'd be looking to get this for under the magic number...

As for the M-Coupe, I sat into one once and couldn't get my knees past the steering wheel; not for tall people.

VB; what would you do with 60 Carinas?

    God I'm depressed.

I saw this thread, then checked out what I could get for the equivalent in Swiss Francs (About 45K). I had *two* criteria....that it be a cabrio and that it be on sale on the site I used for hunting my last car.

Porsche...ferari...tvr...audi..saab...AC feckin' Cobra (going over budget by 1 or 2 K)

But you know...at the end of it all...

I'd probably buy a Peugeot 205 cabrio for next to nothing (cause I just had to get rid of one) and the cash into modernising the drive, simply cause the car is too much fun.

I drove an elise for 2 years as an everyday car. I have parked it in liffey valley and all around. It's like any two seater sports car in that you can't have more then one passenger but the boot is actually fairly big. The opening to it isn't but the amount you can fit in is huge. In fact i went on a two week drive to the uk with one suitcase and two large duffel bags and countless other bits and pieces. You would be surprised at how much you can fit in when you want :D
