We have recently brought in a van from UK, thinking we had a mechanic lined up to help us with any problems we might encounter. He did a survey on van but has now decided he doesn't want to work on it. We are in Wicklow Town. Does anyone know of any good mechanics who would be willing to work on this in the Wicklow area. We would consider as far north as Bray, and as far south as Gorey.

To be totally honest, lots of folks haven't got a clue when it comes to working on these, so for peace of mind I'd plum for a specialist everytime...even if it means he's not 'local'. I'd also recommend learning to do as much yourself as you can....then you have the satisfaction of doing it yourself, and knwoing to the best of your abilities its been done properly.

I made the mistake of following my local motorfactors advice and using the local 'vw fella'...I made sure he was happy to work on T25's before I booked it in to him, he assured me he was...but he'll never so much as lift a spanner in my van's direction again. After he changed the cambelt for us, we *drive* it home, check under the engine lid, to discover he's left the rocker cover off, he's 'forgotten' to reattach the exhaust manifold, he left the inspection cap off the flywheel...not devastating in itself, but he failed to notice we had a huge problem with leaking gearbox oil, and was seemingly oblivious to the fact that my flywheel was almost full to the top with gearbox oil (not something he was responsible for, but odd that he didn't notice and either investigate or mention it to us  ) There's was lots of other small things he either hadn't put back properly or at all...

So we now go a bit further (hour and a half journey) and get the van worked on by a guy we trust implicitly, and who knows his way around these vans in his sleep! He's also happy to teach us along the way, so we're becoming more and more mechanically handy on the old van. Last March my partner and I did a comlete engine swap ourselves (under supervision) when I upgraded from a 1.6D to a 1.9D, so quite chuffed at that! My OH has since taught himself to totally realign the gear linkages, change the steering rack and anti-roll bar bushes, swap the radiator, etc etc...my OH's T25 mechanical CV gets longer and longer :D ...as we slowly uncover previous owner's quick-fixes and bodges, and anything we're not confident at tackling oursleves or anything we want to learn to do....off we go down the road to Krazy Kombis. He's located in Kilkenny, so not within the local parameters you've set yourself, but definitely worth the trip ;)
