From an article by "Conn [job] Corrigan":
    4. The country is better looking If John Betjeman had the misfortune of visiting pre-Celtic Tiger Mullingar, Naas, Nenagh or any of Limerick, his line Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough could well have been different. Thankfully, with the dishonourable exception of Limerick, these places are looking much better these days.
The discerning Dubliner knows to appreciate Temple Bar during the day or for an evening meal, but to avoid it like Limerick at night.

The full article is available http://thedubliner.typepad.com/the_dubliner_magazine/2007/06/10_reasons_why_.html#more if you're brain-dead enough to read it.

his line Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough

There is a new saying about Slough .....

"Come to Slough - everone else has"

It's a long time since I was there but I understand just about every nation in the world is represented in Slough with good size populations .... :p

The comments are moderated, however I did manage to get mine published. Then at about 3.30 they suddenly stopped publishing comments. wonder why.

Anyway, have dropped the editor a mail , I would hope to get a response. When a Galway First columnist likened the destruction of stray cats to a Limerick gangland murder, that of Kieran Keane, he was quick enough to respond, but I have found Dublin people to be more arrogant than galway people, so I am not holding out much hope.

Lads, the guy is writing for a magazine that even laughing stocks laugh at. Hell, a thread on after hours probably has a higher readership than that magazine, don't give him the oxygen of publicity.

This is the same rag that came out complaining about the American golfers before the Rider Cup, claiming that Tiger Woods wife had posed naked online!

This would have been bad enough, if not for the fact that it wasn't her! One of their "high class" journalists had probably just being surfing for porn, and believed what he read on the internet!!!

These people are simply idiots, and I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if whichever hack wrote this had never even been to Limerick, never mind been here in the last few years!

On a separate note, maybe this is a bit conspiratorial;) , but I found the 2006 Annual Garda report very interesting.
The year after it was used to point out somewhat in the media (The Prof from UL), that Dublin has three times more violent crime per capita than anywhere else in the country, the Annual figures were printed without a county by county breakdown for the first time!
For the first time ever in 2006, more than half of the murders in Ireland were in the metropolitan Dublin area (that's just some 450,000 people living there BTW - 1/10 of the population, 1/2 of the murders!!! ).
It just seems strange that they decide to change the formula for no reason, to hide these facts from the public.
Normally it's over 100 pages in English and the same again in Irish.
This year we got a 20 page document that was half English, half Irish, and full of photos!
Literally a tiny fraction of the usual info.

Maybe it's just me, but that seems fishy.

Actually much, if not most of the credit has to go to pamela duncan of the post.

Althoughy I would imagine that she would have contacted them a few days ago when researching the story, yet the comments were not removed until internet readers found the site and started making their views known.
