She was great to deal with, especially after the test when she gave me some advice on how to improve some of my little mistakes.
It's good to know some of them do it! The testers refused to give me any feedback (other than the completely context-free marking sheet) on both my tests, even the successful one

Passed 3rd time in Galway today, can't describe how exilerating it is to finally pass! Only got 1 blue mark too, as opposed to 9 and 13 the first 2 tests!

    Hi

Some *0 years after doing my last driving test, I found myself facing another driving test.

I passsed my car test a month after my 18th birthday, then before I was 20 years old, I had a military truck licence, as well as a few licences for specialised military vehilcles.

At that point, I thought that was it - I would never have to do a driving test again.

BUT - last year, I discoverd motorbikes. :D

So, first things first - Learners Permit.
This went off with out a problem (38 out of 40) almost a year ago.
Then later in the year, I applied for my full test.

I got a test for the 5th of January this year. The roads were covered in ice, and predictiably, it was cancceled.

Got a new date for today. Booked pre-test lessons for last Friday, and these went OK.

Woke up this morning, and everything (car, bike, etc) was covered in snow - there I was thinking - OH NO, I don't want this cancelled again.

    Thank goodness it was not.

Anyway - Had the test, and...

    PASSED! :D

A few things wrong, but - a pass is a pass.

    I am sooooooooo happy.

Now that I am home - it is beer time!

Passed 3rd time in Finglas today, such a relief :D

congrats on passing :) can you tell me what route he/she took you on?
i have cancelled my test umpteen times because i keep thinking i will fail it.
i had one for jan, that was cancelled due to the snow, gave me another for last week, they cancelled that, said there was no tester available for my test, so now i have one for two weeks time..
a friend brought me around an area of glasnevin, old finglas road etc, but when i eventually got my instructor to bring me up to finglas, (i dont know the area at all) he just brought me up main st, turned right, then back into city center. so i still have no clue!

forgot to ask you, on the old finglas road, (if you went there) there were a lot of the split speed bumps, i have read different views here on what to do approaching them, one is straddle them, if no traffic and it is safe, the other, slow down, go over them regardless of traffic as you need to show that you are aware of the reasoning of them being there. how did you deal with them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 470 ✭✭RobertM

Honestly, I didn't took any lessons with an instructor, because I was sure I was going to fail it. And never been in finglas other than the N2, so I can't tell you the exact route, but I will try to make you a map. It was something like this http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Jamestown+Rd&daddr=Clune+Rd+to:McKee+Rd+to:Sycamore+Rd+to:Grove+Rd+to:Grove+Park+Rd+to:Grove+Park+Dr+to:Grove+Park+Crescent+to:Beneavin+Dr+to:Beneavin+Rd+to:Glasaree+Rd+to:Glasanaon+Rd+to:R103%2FSeamus+Ennis+Rd+to:53.391475,-6.296675&hl=en&geocode=FSa3LgMdiu-f_w%3BFVawLgMdDPGf_w%3BFY64LgMdcAGg_w%3BFSG5LgMdwg-g_w%3BFcKwLgMd9g6g_w%3BFeKvLgMdzhSg_w%3BFW6zLgMdGByg_w%3BFVCwLgMdDiqg_w%3BFauoLgMdhy6g_w%3BFcynLgMdRhqg_w%3BFYqjLgMdKA-g_w%3BFbSbLgMdrQig_w%3BFbapLgMdqfOf_w%3B&mra=mi&mrcr=12&mrsp=13&sz=15&sll=53.390802,-6.289244&sspn=0.01684,0.038581&ie=UTF8&z=15

And with the speedramps, I straddled them, and she didn't mark me, so I guess it was right :)

Good luck on passing the test, Oh, and if you pick Finglas,a make sure not to get booked when the little kiddies are finishing their school, because the traffic and parked cars is a nightmare.

Thats great with the map on it, big help! if i i get that route i will be happy enough, i didnt see any of those little roundabouts, the painted on the road ones, on that route you posted. i hate going around them, i always think i am on the actual painted part at some part of the turn.
Im going to go around that way to see what its like. i know it might not be the same route that i get but its practice in the general area anyway. congrats again and thanks :)

I passed in Wilton (Cork) today. To prepare, I took a lesson the hour before my test.

In fairness, I have been driving (in the US) for about 15 years.

I have nothing but good things to say about my experience. My instructor was great, the tester was friendly, professional, and treated me like an adult.

Two grade 1s - I should have studied the rules of the road before going in, and two grade 2s - One for not looking around carefully enough during my reverse-around-a-corner maneuver (what is the point of this, anyways?), and the other for looking down to see what gear I was in (which I attribute to being rust in driving manual).

    Good times.

    Good luck to all!

    -Bill

yehey! passed in dundalk, first time! i'm so lucky the weather today is glorious that the tester was such in a good mood. i was not really sure i passed coz i've some mistakes with the gears, giving signals, giving right of way, and i think i've showed some hesitancy at some parts of the exam. but hey! it really is a glorious day!!!

Passed mine today in Cork. Such a relief after failing it 4 times. The first few times i just wasnt good enough and i think i was a bit unlucky other times but i finally passed it. Weird thing is i did the least amount of preperation for this one - no lessons and only glanced over the rules of the road for about half an hour before the test. My tester was very nice in comparison with some of the previous ones so i felt realy relaxed throughout.

Absolutely thrilled. Good luck to everyone else doing theirs...

Did mine for the 4th time yesterday and passed, drove like I knew I could and got it done. A bit of irony for any of those who believe in fate, the guy who failed me on my first test in Wicklow was the same guy who passed me in Churchtown yesterday! Best feeling in the world and such a relief to have it done and dusted!

Well done, it's a great feeling. I still remember how I felt passing mine 17 years ago :D

Passed yesterday in Churchtown, first test. 6 G2's I think, and a couple of G1's. Very professional and pleasnt tester who after about 10 minutes of the drive seemed to want me to pass, if that makes sense. Couldn't for the life of me describe the route but I had taken a number of lessons in or around the area and was familiar with most of the roads.

I thought I had made a mess of something very early on which transpired was no big deal at all - the lesson is, keep driving.

Real relief at getting this out of the way - especially as I had given up match tickets (test at 2:00) for it.

I passed first time 2 weeks ago in Rathgar.
I got a lot of help from reading this board, so I thought I should register to say thanks, and also to help anyone who might want to ask questions.
I was lucky, I had a very nice tester - a lady - who made me feel at ease straight away. I arrived early (as they say you should!) and she called my name as soon as I walked in the door, and seemed pleasantly surprised that I was there! All told, the test only took me about 35 minutes with approx 25 minutes of that actually out driving. I was concerned that it was short because I had done badly, but apparently not as only got 2 grade 1's and 2 grade 2's. Overall, my experience of the driving test and the system in this country has been pretty positive. I applied on 25th Jan 2010, and got test date for 1st March 2010. And as I say, I felt the tester was pleasant and fair. I also took a few pre test lessons with a fantastic instructor (if anyone needs a rec for an instructor in South Dublin let me know). I also learnt a lot reading boards.ie so thank you all :)

Glad you got through it! Probably having a positive attitude going in (and being early/on time, which makes it easier to relax) helped a lot. I think a lot of people go in there in a foul mood, worrying about things and generally feeling awful, which apart from bringing down the tester's mood will probably impair the driver's judgement a little bit on the roads.

I was actually quite nervous initially, but the tester was so nice from the start that I relaxed straight away - which in turn definitely helped me drive better during the test. I think it's important for people to bear in mind that they aren't out to "get you". I had an idea in my head beforehand that the tester was going to be a horrible person who was going to try to catch me out but my experience couldn't have been further from that.

I passed there on my first try in Wilton, Cork today. So happy because I only started driving in January (I'm 25 never got round to learning till now). Tester was really nice but I thought I'd failed near the end when I went on a roundabout when I knew I shouldn't. Ended up being my only grade 2.

    Couple of things
    - thanks for all the tips of this forum its been a great help
    - got my driving instructor from a friend's recommendation and he has been brilliant. I learned to drive with him so never got into bad habits.
    - I practiced hard on the test routes so I was largely familiar with the route today. I know people think this is cheating but you are going to be nervous given the nature of the test so I think its understandable to want to be comfortable with the roads ahead of time
    - Clean your car inside and out and dress presentably. Impressions matter
