I've just seen details of these new DAB-only radio stations on Wikipedia and RTE's website. I hadn't heard anything about them before but Wikipedia says they all went on air on May 31st and some won't launch until "late summer".

RTÉ 2XM A sister station for 2fm playing Indie and Nu Metal.

RTÉ Choice Comedy shows, documentaries, vintage shows, music and international programming.

RTÉ Gold Classic tunes, based on 2fm's "Jukebox". I guess it'll be like an RTE version of Q102 or Beeb R2.

RTÉ Junior Exactly what it says on the tin :(

RTÉ Digital Radio News Radio 1's news updates on a loop.
Audio from Six One and The Nine O'Clock News

RTÉ Digital Radio Sport Radio 1's sports updates on a loop.

2xm should be great - a music station without R&B, Dance or Colm and Jim Jim :D. But I doubt kids/teenagers will touch anything with "junior" in it with a barge poll  . And are "Digital Radio News" and "Digital Radio Sport" the best they can come up with?!

    Sounds alright though.

According to the RTÉ Digital website the News channel, 2XM, Junior and Gold have gone live for Dublin/Leinster. They're keeping quiet about it though.

But they put it on the internet anyway

Is the name "RTE Choice" a deliberate attempt to piggyback on the excellent Choice FM from last year, I wonder ?

there was a press release about the new channels on Wednesday and practically every newspaper did a story on it over the last 3 days, so hardly 'keeping it quiet'
There are also 2 or 3 other threads on here about it.

RTÉ announces details of 6 new trial DAB digital radio stations

RTÉ today (12 June 2007) announced details of six new trial digital radio stations, designed to bring wider choice to listeners on digital radio.

As part of its DAB digital radio trials, RTÉ introduced four new services this week with a further two in development for transmission later this summer.

"RTÉ is already working with the radio industry and with regulatory bodies to explore this exciting new technology which we believe represents the future for Irish radio"

RTÉ's six new DAB-only radio stations are available to anyone living in the Greater Dublin and North East coast area who owns a DAB digital radio. The six services will remain on public trial until November 2007.

DAB Digital Radio is the latest form of radio technology. DAB stands for: Digital Audio Broadcasting

Four of RTÉ's six new DAB-only radio stations are currently on trial in the Greater Dublin and North East coast area of Ireland and a further two will be on air shortly. 36% of Ireland's population can listen to the tests of RTÉ's prototype stations if they buy a new digital radio set.

As the trial is testing content and programming RTÉ's new digital radio services will be evolving over the coming months.

    What is Digital Radio?

Digital Radio means more stations, more choice and more content for listeners.
New DAB digital radios feature sleek design and are available in a huge variety of types (nearly 300)
    Easy to use
Push button stations - no twiddling
Pause & rewind on some radios, soon digital radios will also have a record function
    Clearer sound
Most DAB digital radios also receive FM

What is the difference between DAB and digital radio?

DAB is a new form of radio technology that requires a DAB radio set or DAB player.

Digital radio is a generic term referring to all forms of digital radio listening including cable, satellite, digital radio via DTT, DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) and DAB digital radio.

    10 REASONS TO SWITCH ON TO DAB DIGITAL RADIO;

    1. More choice & more content: DAB digital radio, the latest radio technology, means that Ireland should soon have a range of new radio stations. People who buy a DAB digital radio set will have greater choice with specific stations for different listeners' tastes. RTÉ Radio is already trialling four new services and two further trial services will go live this summer.

    2. No hiss or crackle: DAB digital radio means interference free listening in digital quality sound. There's no hiss, crackle, or pop, no fading, no overlap, just great radio all the time.

Digital radio doesn't suffer from the annoying background noises which can spoil FM and medium wave broadcasts. With digital radio you get more robust reception and clear sound all the time, provided you remain within the coverage area.

    3. Easy to use - no tuning: What's the frequency of your favourite FM radio station? You'd be surprised how many people know the name of their favourite FM radio station but can't actually find it on the radio dial. With DAB digital radios there are no frequencies. Just choose the station you want by name from the text display screen. It's easy every time and you don't need to worry about getting lost. No more twiddling a dial or remembering frequencies and wavebands to get the best reception.

    4. Multimedia fun: Have you ever heard a song on the radio and wanted to know who it is by or what it's called, or tuned into talk radio and wanted to know what the programme is about or who is speaking?

Digital radio sets have a small screen which carries information about the programme you're listening to. This may be the name of the presenter, the guests, the name of the track currently being played, email addresses, details of the next programme, up-to-the-minute sports results or competition details. Some newer digital radios now even display album covers of the songs being played on the screen.

Some stations also scroll news headlines and other up-to-date information. It is planned that this service will develop even further in time, providing free, useful information and an electronic programme guide (EPG) to make listening to digital radio an even better experience.

The next step is music downloads - listen to a song on DAB radio, press a button and have the song delivered to your DAB phone or radio. This is now available in the U.K.

    5. Pause & Rewind: Imagine if the phone or doorbell rings when you're listening to your favourite radio programme; The 2fm Breakfast Show with Colm and Jim-Jim, Drivetime with Dave Fanning on RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm's The Will Leahy Show in the afternoon. Now with DAB digital radio sets you can pause the programme and go back to it later.

    6. Record: You know you'll be out this Thursday night and you'll miss your favourite radio programme. With some of the latest DAB digital radio models, you can record radio to a memory card. For the first time this puts you in control of when you listen to the radio. You can stop time, go back in time, or set a timer to record a future programme.

    7. Free to Air: Unlike some digital television services, you don't have to pay to receive DAB digital radio stations. Once you've bought the product, you'll enjoy all the benefits of digital radio stations completely free of charge.

    8. FM too! : Most DAB digital radios also receive FM so you can still listen to FM anytime you like and you've all the benefits of both types of radio listening.

    9. All shapes and sizes - likely to start at €40: DAB digital radios come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours (over 300 types) from in-car to kitchen radios to portable radios starting from about €40 each.

    10. DAB digital radios look great! DAB digital radios all look great! There are even retro-designed digital radios in pastel hues that would look great in any room in the house, in the office or would make great gifts for friends or family.

I would have thought they got the idea for the name from BBC Choice, the defunct digital TV channel that became BBC Three.

I would also have thought that naming their digital radio stations more like the BBC's ones would have made more sense,- i.e.: RTÉ Radio 3, 4, 5, etc.

    Ah well

Maybe the names will change when they progress from "trial" status. Then again....

I agree that Radio 2, 3, 4, etc would make more sense, though maybe they want to seperate themselves from BBC (that's unlikely).

I think creative names that attempt to describe the genre of the station are a much better idea than Radio 3, Radio 4 etc.

Maybe it applies more to TV than radio but with multichannel it will be a lot more interesting for each network's channels to have their own original identities (eg RTE Eolas, NewsTalk Plus or whatever) than the current TV style - RTE1, BBC1, ITV1, Sky1, Virgin1, ABC1 etc

I wouldn't be worrying about the names that RTE are putting on their new radio stations. Content is King.

But, for what it's worth, I agree with one the previous contributors that names which reflect the content/philosophy of the station are much more preferrable (and easier to market) than boring old RTE 1/2/3/4/......etc.

So, for a bit of fun, what should RTE's television stations be re-named to following their DAB radio station example?

RTE One -> RTE Pr íomh
RTE Two -> RTE USA & GAA :p

Thanks for that. I shall give my verdict when it happens. However, I thought they were closing them down in November when the trial ends!

    Cheers.

This trial ends in November, but RTÉ will, with all probability launch a full service by then. Just in time for Christmas. :)

Just like to say from what I've listened so far that 2XM piddles all over Phantom FM. But I'm sure it won't take long for RTE to fix that though. ;)

More quality on the airwaves, has to be good for everyone.
