yeah i know, half the crowd were scumbags, the guy didnt even want it,i heard him say oh a towel i'l try take that then for the laugh, security just stood there looking at the whole thing

Ah come on thats not fair. I'm a pretty tall guy and what generally happens to me is somebody will come up and stand right in front of so close that they are literally leaning on top of me and so I have to move back, then another person comes along does the same and so forth until I'm standing at the back :(
I generally look around me and will try wherever possible to not be blocking other peoples view.

What really bothers me is people who just mill through the crowd to get to the front or whatever, absolutely no consideration for their fellow concert goers

well im a pretty small guy and what happens is i cant see the band

    Ok i'll use small words.

The thread is about pet peeves at gigs.
i.ie. Talkers, shusshers, sweaty guys etc.

How are the frames a pet peeve at a gig?

If you not liking the frames is continually on your mind during another gig you are at, that's pretty ****ed up.
    Need i go on?

the ole ole ole thing does it for me..actually drives me insane.. do people not realise its actually italian

also smoking in a really packed crowd is so thoughtless

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 798 ✭✭✭bobbyjoe

People who go up to the front and then complain about being squashed what do they expect.
Those who spend the entire gig calling people and saying guess where I am listen its fuggin deadly. They get more of a kick out of telling others where they are instead of enjoying the gig.

Although the "tall person infront" is anoying, the guy has every right to be there..just move around and you will get a spot where you can see.

in front is fine, if there's a bit of a gap i can generally see over their shoulder. it's when they stand in front and so close that my nose is right in their back that i get twitchy.

watever-spanish or italian its not irish anyways!!!

Smoking pisses me off no end.

A sea of mobile phones above a crowd to take a mass of terrible photographs, to some shíte sound effect off their phone, people who use flashes on their cameras... I do my fair bit of concert photography, and there's nothing more annoying than having to put up with a hundred flashes coming from behind you...especially when your TOA say you're not allowed to use flash, and are only allowed to take photographs for the first three songs. (Standard agreement)

Drunk women that start singing (Duke Special seated gig in Vicar St a few months back anyone?) out of tune...as loud as they can... during a quiet song.

People who think moshing is about beating the **** out of the person next to them...

The list goes on and on though...

    Why is this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 147 ✭✭froggie_1

when you've manouvered yourself into the perfect spot with a great view and a bit of space and suddenly just before the band starts, it happens. Some big locked idiot jostles and shoves himself right infront of you, pisses everyone around him off. shouts roars and annoys everyone. he gets filthies from everyone but doesnt give a sh1t. happened to me last at Badly Drawn Boy. Guy had obviously no interest, prob got a free ticket. he eventually fecked off. At EP last yr for the PetShopBoys, the guy with the BIG STUPID WIDE hat that wouldnt take it off after being asked about 10 times.... is there anything more infurating or buzz wrecking than people like that?

Yeah cos all those flashing cameras really put you off from watching all the flashing lights on stage.

As for tall people standing in front of you at gigs, being 6'1" I've probably been the tall guy that people complain about but I always try to make sure that I don't stand directly in front of someone. However, for some reason (Murphy's Law no doubt) anyone over 6'1" always tend to stand in front of me at gigs! Happens every time without fail!

Have to say I really hate the "olé olé olé" crew....

I agree with the camera thing: take one or two, there is seriously no need for hundreds.

People who talk through quiet songs. "Oh my god, I love this song!!! It's like so amazing". Why not shut up and listen to it so??? Aaaaaagghhhh!!!

I went to see Dweezil Zappa last year with a friend of mine. It was a seated gig in Vicar street and the guy sitting behind him (who we suspect was coked out of it) was roaring the lyrics one line in advance. Drove my pal nuts!

that is the most annoying thing. i was at a metal gig in the point last dec, a trash metal band were opening. As you would except mosh pits everywhere (until security came into the crowd!!) the amount of twats complaining about people bumping into them... its a bloody metal gig!!!:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,058 ✭✭✭JJ

When you're at a moshpit type gig...

Sweaty guys with their shirts off that you keep bumping into and almost slide off them and fall on the floor. Put your damn shirt back on.

When you're at quiet/acoustic type gigs...

People who chat through the whole thing. If you want to talk go to a pub where the admission is free. The rest of us paid to listen to the music, not your inane chatter.

Haha, there's always this one. They can be handy though, when the girlfriend becomes too hysterical/faints and then the both of them have to go get pulled out, and then you can slip into their spot at the barrier!

Hysterical screaming girls. I had two behind me at a completely inappropriate gig, they spent the whole thing taking deep breaths and screaming at the top of their lungs and complaining about being squished, and asking my friend if they could ride on his shoulders. This was annoying enough until at one stage I ended up with a pair of underage boobs at my back because they tried to flash the lead singer... and they were all of five feet and no inches, in the pit.

'OMG OMG SHOULD I FLASH HIM!!!'
    'OMG YES!!! TEEHEEHEE!'
'OK! WEEEEEEE! LEAD SINGER, HEY! LOOK AT ME!'
'OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THAT!!! HE TOTALLY LOOKED!'
    'OMG'

Likewise, aggressive kids who somehow manage to find their way in (and the occasional parents who think it's a good idea to bring their kids into the pit with them) I was at this supposedly over-16 gig with a kid who couldn't have been more than 12 beside me and he was kicking the sh!t out of me and everyone around him anytime we got pushed towards him. I grabbed a drumstick at the end and he nearly took my eye out trying to get it off me.

People who think a pit means they can get away with grabbing/assaulting/mauling girls without any consequences. Oh, there will be consequences, and don't look so shocked when you receive them!

Security that's too extreme at metal gigs... Come on like give us a break..

The little group of 12 years olds that jump up and down constanly (and inappropriately):
    "OMG OMG OMG"

As was said, fat sweaty topless man. *shivers*

People that think it's a great laugh to throw beer/water on peoples heads/into the crowd: "OMG HAHA FUNNNNEY". No, just, no.

I think what annoys me most is fat sweaty topless men though, they've been out in full force lately..

Example, someone shouting "DELIVERANCE!" when Bella Fleck was playing a slow accoustic piece on the banjo
That's just gold though :) Like when that comdian brought out the double base and someone shouted "Oi you, the migit with the violin". So many levels. Anyway I've enjoyed reading all the whiney rants. I love gigs.

A-holes who stand in front of you holding their $hitty mobiles/digital cameras in the air for f**king ages to take what are $hit photos and videos and which means you get to see nothing from behind them. I swear I could have killed one particular pr1ck who was doing this throughout a gig I was at recently. IT seems that all hese dumb-asses want to do is record some crap resolution images of the show instead of actually enjoying and appreciating the gig.

When your in the pit or up close after turning up early/staying in your spot and some i=ucker shoves through everyone and stands in front of you. Even worse if they are tall. I feel bad for people who let these people do this to them.

when youre up the front/in the pit and absolutely gasping for a bit of water, and well, in my experience the usual etiquette is whoever gets their hands on it first will usually take a sip, enough to wet the mouth usually (and my god, isnt that little sip the most rejuvenating thing ever?!), and then pass it on... friends/the people who look seriously desperate get first choice, after that, just pass it on to anyone... but its the people who down the lot constantly (its allowed once, maybe twice), or just waste it altogether that annoy me...

the worst was at the last 'tallica gig in the rds, was up in the pit and some huge german guy was there, fairly up front, we'd gotten the first bus of the day in, and had queued for absolute hours, but this huge german guy, stood in the classic asshole position with his arms crossed in a manner that meant his elbows were lethal weapons, not only that, but he had a big backpacking bag on his back, and in that at least 2 2L bottles of water. when the water was passed out, he'd take an entire cup, and pour it into one of his big, already full bottles.

    god that guy sucked!

also, people with big bags in pit type areas, people overly forceful to get to the front (yeah, most people wana be there, nad there is an element of having to put effort into standing your ground/getting yourself a lil closer to the stage), but there's limits....

CROWDSURFERS!!! was at a big festival in germany and was up the front in the bit behind the pit, and holy crap, the amoutn of crowdsurfers was unreal. im not exactly new to this kinda gig, but this was unreal. there were literally streams of people coming in and when its so cramped that there isnt the space to even so much as put yours hands up to support them/protect yourself, thats when its officially not good. then one of the idiots will fall and youre suddenly crushed under about 10 people... i literally got to the point where crowdsurfers were giving me panic attacks, and despite the gig being awesome, i spent a whole lot of it bawling, in tears... twas a really really freaky experience for me, but i am more thankful for hte no crowdsurfing rule we tend to have over here.

whew. i should go to bed now, im waaaaaaay overly ranting...

People who charge into the arena as the main band is coming on and then claim you're sitting in their seat, where you have been in plenty of time, disrupting your enjoyment of the grand entrance as you each pull out your tickets to find that although we each have the same block and seat numbers, the pillock who came late is in the wrong stand.

    Happens.

Loved reading each of your rants and said to myself that I had to reply...

Was recently at my first standing concert which was in the Marquee, good concert but with a few little peeves...
    • People Smoking - really sickening, am sure this one guy had a cigar...
    • The really drunk people - One of the lads near me at this gig was locked and just fallin round the place, eventually he moved (well fell) away...
The biggest problem though that I had was that I am about 6`1 which isn't awfully tall but supposedly because I am taller than some people I should stand at the back away from the stage even though I am there earlier than others. I mean for feck sake...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭Icarian

    (1) Girls who say (sorry, can i get by?)

you step back to let them past, and they just stop there and stand in front of you for the whole gig

    (2) when your almost at the front, and then the guy/girl in front of you sees their friend behind you and pulls them to the front pushing you further back as they try to move you from your space (i usually put my bony elbows to work to make sure it doesnt happen!! mother****ers deserve it)

    (3) really drunk people pushing to the front, throwing drinks etc... if you want to get hammered, go to a bar, im there to see my favourite bands/musical heros

basically anyone who trys to weasel their way to the front when youve been waiting for hours for your space

if someone has waited hours to get to the front, not drinking/going to the toilet, then they deserve to be there, they wanted it more than you, DONT barge to the front halfway through a gig because you sort of like the main band

Being a Sound Engineer that works in the middle of a crowd, this is one of my main peeves. Especially since now using a digital desk. Beer and electronics equals end of show, everyone out, no refunds, GOOD NIGHT!

Also people who wolf whistle at gigs or bring whistles. I am trying to make things sound as good as possible. Not going to happen if you destroy my hearing and my livelihood.

The no shirt thing is the worst. I was working in Milan this summer and I went to a Queens of the stone Age gig and with in 5 minutes it was full of disgusting sweaty Italian men bumping into me with shirtless.

There is nothing worse then wearing something thats covered in sweat that's not yours
