Hotmail instant messenger - unwanted messages

Yesterday while I was logged onto windows live hotmail I got an instant message/chat from somone who wasn't a contact or who isn't in my address book.

How can this happen? Was a bit freaked, esp as I didn't like the question that was asked. Sounded as if someone has been 'watching' me.

I know if you want to add a new contact to your list the other person has to agree and I never agree to add a new contact unless I know who that person is.

I can block the contact but I'm just wondering how were they able to contact me?

No, I didn't recognise the email address and have searched through my contacts and no one has that address.

If they had changed address why didn't they just tell me? And the question that was asked, anyone who knew me would know the answer.

My guess is that someone could have been eaves-dropping on your conversations. MSN Messenger is an "unsecure" client. This means that the messages you send are not encrypted by your computer before being sent to the person you are chatting with. This allows anyone on the same network to listen in on your conversation.

My advice would be to download and install a free program called pidgin http://pidgin.im/ . I use this when talking to friends. After downloading and installin git, get your friends to do the same and install the Pidgin-Encryption plugin (http://pidgin-encryption.sourceforge.net). This will allow you to have conversations with your friends on the MSN network, but all of the messages that pass between participants will be encrypted. i.e. Eavesdroppers will not be able to read them.
