Internet speed problems: PC slow, laptop fine... Why?

The speeds on my internet connection have been really weird lately. Web pages can be very slow to load a lot of the time, downlaod speeds are up and down, but one downloading program struggles to connect and has very slow speeds. Today I realised that my flatmates laptop seems totally fine and unaffected, for both web and downlading, same program etc. We're both on the same wireless network, I have a USB adaptor and a 10 feet from the linksys router. Both are dells on windows XP

Can internet speed be affected like this to just one pc? Any idea what I should do to try to fix it? Its driving me nuts!

Check that theres no virus/spyware/adware and check to see if you have the latest drivers for your USB adapter. Is it a secured network? Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser and see how many clients are connected. If its unsecured and neighbors are using it, thats gonna reduce speeds. But if your flatmates laptop is fine, that suggests its an issue with your PC, so like I said, virus scans and all that jazz:)

    Google and use
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    HijackThis

Don't use HijackThis yourself. It should show if there's anything cause your PC slow down

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

    HijackThis_sfx download

    Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here

Thanks guys. I've actually just reinstalled windows so would be surprised if there was something really nasty already, but the results are below:

Hey I'm pretty sure I found what was causing your Internet speed problems, it's a serious enough issue actually. Not malware related though. You need to fix this or you will have the same problem.

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.
    1. Please download LSPFix from here.
    2. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
    3. Check the I know what I'm doing box.
    4. In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of winsflt.dll.
    5. Select every instance of winsflt.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
    6. When you are done click Finish>>.

Tell me how that goes when your done.

Thanks, I did that, and at first things seems to be faster, but later I was still having some slow periods. However mainly one of my programs "Ares" just hangs on "Connecting" all the time. I've reinstalled and followed the exact instructions using portforward.com but it is still not working right. Sometimes some of the files do download, even though it says it is not connected...

I also updated my wireless adaptor drivers too.

    Any more suggestions?
    Thanks guys.
