Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I want to install security software on a desktop and one notebook running
Windows XP to restrict what my 7 yr old can access.
Ideally I want to be able to build up a whitelist (or conversely blacklist)
so that he can just access certain sites (eg BBC ceebies, educational
    sites....etc).

Any recommendations ? Ideally I'd like to be able to purchase the
software online so that I can install it straight away (since its not
convenient for me to get down to PC world in Galway this week).

I find netdog very good. If you just google "netdog" you should find it. You can download and install straight away. Only problem is, i think its just a trial version that lasts a month. However you can then uninstall the programme and reinstall and the trial will work again. Its a pain having to reinstall every month but its worth it.

    Snip 8<

It searches a url (and body content) for certain keywords. You can also ban or allow websites manually.

    The other alternative is this:

Hide internet explorer shortcuts and install firefox as your browser instead. Then use this firefox add-on called foxfilter:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4351

Again it searches a url (and body content) for keywords.

    Both work very effectively

Thanks! That firefox addon sounds ideal.
However, is it possible for the firefox addon to filter or not filter depending
on who is logged into the Windows XP machine (i.e per WinXP user account)?
I'd like a solution whereby the minors login has this restriction enabled
but parents who login to the computer have full access without having
to disable the addon each time they need to surf.

I'm not sure if foxfilter allows that. However the way i do it is this:

For minors, the default browser is firefox (with foxfilter enabled) and i've hidden all trace of internet explorer.

For admin login, default browser is internet explorer which has no restrictions.

Unless your kids are computer whizkids, they're probably not gonna even look for internet explorer and will just use firefox. I guess its not ideal but it works for me.

Also, even if you were to keep foxfilter active on both accounts, the adults can just use the password to access any page that is blocked and that access will only be granted for that time only. ie, if you go back to that same page you will still need the password again
