Next up for Downtownsounds is our first international guest in the ‘Soul Room’ at Spirit, as Dj Cosmo takes to the decks this Saturday June 23rd.Those of you who saw her last August in Ri-Ra after the Daft Punk gig won’t need telling how good this lady is behind a set of decks. See below for a profile.

If you’d like to come down and check out Cosmo, send us a mail back and we’ll put you on our permanent guestlist (with room for two guests) for Saturdays@Spirit.

Here's a mix from the good lady herself to peruse:

We are alternating with Big Brother Records for the next few weeks due to renovations in the basement but the perma-DTS guestlist still applies each Saturday.

We’ll drive on the following Friday 29th with Scando-Disco maestro Todd Terje in the Ri-Ra basement, with Le Bien, Joey Evlis and El Tomo ramraiding the Globe.

The next 52FUNK on Saturday July 14th will see Pablo and Mark Allton going at it hammer and tongs, with one more local guest TBC, while July 27th will see us welcome back the flamboyant neo-disco genius Daniel Wang to the Ri-Ra. Ooh, it’s gonna be a disco-dancing summer……

"She's very devoted and very pure about the music. She's one of the only people I would trust, both with the music and with the equipment, to fill in for me."

    David Mancuso, The Loft

Colleen Murphy aka DJ Cosmo made her Irish debut at Ri-Ra last August at Downtownsounds' Daft Punk afterparty in Ri-Ra. A steady stream of punters returning from the French house legends' gig in Marley ensured the 'House Full' signs were going up by 1am.

A dj with over 20 years experience, she is the only alternate at David Mancuso's fabled afterhours New York sessions. Along with Mancuso, she co-compiled two volumes of 'Loft' compilations for London label Nuphonic in 2000 and 2001. They gave an official re-release to many of the underground disco anthems that lit up the dancefloor there and led to a huge resurgence of interest in the professional houseparty that still runs regularly in the Big Apple over 35 years since it's inception.

Thanks in part to Cosmo's hard work, there are now regular Loft parties in London, Dublin and Japan. In addition, she dj's regularly around the globe, as well as producing, remixing and running her respected Bitches Brew label.

As she showed that night last August, you can expect an across the board set of amazing dancing music when this lady is on the decks. From house and techno to her beloved funk and disco, she is sure to make any party rock with her seamless mixing and impeccable taste. Her sets are a reflection of her geographical and musical roots that find themselves standing somewhere between the post-disco of New York and the sharp-edge of London. Cosmo's skill at linking the past with the present to create something altogether more edgy is not completely uncanny given the fact that she remains a protege of both David Mancuso and Francois Kevorkian, being one of the few guests at both the renowned Loft and Body & Soul parties. Her appearances across North America, Asia and Europe have crystallised her reputation as being a DJ who is as comfortable with the cutting-edge as she is with the rich musical heritage of her East Coast upbringing. Her instinctive leaning towards eclecticism rather than short-sightedness is again borne out by her Bitches Brew record label - itself named after the 'difficult' Miles Davis album that crossed the boundaries of rock and jazz.
As well as being recognised as a premier club DJ, Cosmo has a worldwide reputation in broadcasting. She held one of the most revered dance mix radio shows in her native New York for seven years and prior to that hosted several radio shows devoted to punk rock, new wave, alternative and sixties psychedelic and progressive rock. She was a commercial radio jock in Japan and currently broadcasts monthly on Tokyo's Shibuya FM. Audiences have been going crazy for her latest program series, the uniquely eclectic "Free Energy", which airs on radio stations and websites throughout the World. She has also released two mix albums, 'The Disco-Tech Of Cosmo' on Yellow and 'New York AfterHours' on Nervous. Collaborations with Danny Wang on Playhouse and Ben Mitchell aka Mr Hermano on Disorient, and acclaim from the likes of The Unabombers and Ashley Beedle for her work on Bitch's Brew show that the rest of the world is finally catching up with this unique musical spirit.
