Still I ABSOLUTELY can't believe noone has voted for Bomberman yet - guess it goes with gamer's age/hardware generation they have experience

So, with most-appropriate platform(s) for it (IMHO):

in gold position, 1) Bomberman (PC-Engine, MD or Saturn)
in silver position, 2) Tetris (GB/GBP)
in bronze position, 3) Super Mario Kart (SNES)

I don't believe it, five pages and nobody has once mentioned the True best game ever: Planescape Torment

Certainly the best story and script in any game ever conceived by a human mind. But I'm too much of a perfectionist to get real enjoyment from complex RPGs

. I just spend days deciding whether I want melf's acid arrow or magic missile and end up restarting the game to go down a different path

heh. myself and a mate used to have endless hours of fun playing that on a pcengine emu

its one of the best multiplayer games out there alright

I'm not old - just prematurely maturing

... and still in my early 30s.

1st game ever played was Donkey Kong on CBS Colecovision, when sold new (that'd make it around '82, if my memory serves right).

My first one was a nintendo game & watch called Manhole...archaic, my father was working in Saudi Arabia at the time.
Also had a Trs-80

I'm 33, Saudi made my family quite wealthy back then when most in Ireland hadn't an arse in their trousers, was great for gadgets.

Now I have to go and polish my Zimmer frame

Jesus i forgot SF2! That was the only game i played for the entire year of 1997, and even with the akward mega drive controller i could still beat championship edition on fastest speed and hardest difficulty

My apologies for suggesting more genres but the other threads do apply to 2004 only (having additional threads outside this one for "Best Game Ever in the following category" would be crazy). I was just highlighting how difficult it is to pick a particular game when there are so many classics of different types.

Trying to sort this mess out will be painful. I don't envy the job.
