I'm trying to partition my HDD so I can install Linux Ubuntu and keep my WinXP. Its an 80gb NTFS format with one 7.8 unallocated partition that I can't seem to get rid of. Everytime I try to create a new partition, it reboots and gives me an error 983 (Too many errors). So What the hell do I do?

I've had some awful experiences with partition magic, usually trying to move partitions. Your best bet might be to use the ubuntu livecd to edit/create your partitions. I don't know what tools come with it off hand but to the best of my knowledge it has the facility.

Use the GParted LiveCD (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php). Free, simple to use and I've never had any trouble with it

If you're using a live CD, make sure the partition isn't mounted when you're trying to delete it.

Also, are you trying to create more than four primary partition?

I also used the GNOME partition editor in Ubuntu to create ext3 and NTFS partitions. Windows still insisted on reformatting the NTFS partitions saying they were damaged or unformatted.
