    Folks

    Looking for some assistance?

My BMW 520 (e39) decided to go into shut down earlier tonight!

All appeared fine until I went to start it (after driving it for 30mins), the radio briefly lit up and then nothing....Turned the ignition a couple of times and again nothing. I left it 10 minutes came back and it started again, seemed fine and the only difference was that the radio time had reset to 12:00.

Bit worried that the electrics/ecu might be close to giving up.

If anyone has come across this or knows whats going on I would really appreciate some heads up.

    Thanks

Start with the simple things, start with checking the connections to the battery. Make sure everything is nice and tight

My guess would be the same, lose connction to one of the battery terminals. it's in the boot on the left behind the cover.

I will check out the connections in the morning. This did cross my mind earlier on today but hav'nt had the chance to check it. It did start again a few minutes back so I guess I should be OK for work tomorrow.

    Thanks again

Your battery could be on the way out too, a similar thing happened to me with a similar car a few years ago.

Get the battery and connections checked first.

A very good specialist in Dubland is AC Car Sales off SCR. If the problem persists, give them a shout.

same thing happened with my e39 recently, noticed a slow down in the electric windows, and 2 days later, wouldn't start!

new battery, €70 later, and everything was rosy! as said already, check battery and connections.

The E39's give some immobiliser trouble, expensive, and have the same symptoms you describe EXCEPT your clock has reset which deffo indicates a poor connection or faulty battery !

Dont let someone tell you you need an expensive part until the battery and its connectiuons are checked and ruled out !

    Good luck !
