How do you tell if it has this problem - is there an easy way of noticing

A rough idle is usually an indicator. But to know for sure you need to do a leakdown test

I think too many people have been reading too many UK BMW magazines. Most of the cars with this issue were 1996-March 1998, all of which are now 10 years old (or there abouts).
    If they lasted this long:
    - The problem didn't affect them
    - They didn't "grow up" with the High Sulphur content petrol
    - They had the issue dealt with under goodwill/warranty

Poor idle at cold start up & excessive oil consumption are the tell tale signs.

They changed in March '98 to an Alusil bore lining, I think most of the swapped out engines and steel liners before this.

Yep, a compression test on the cylinders is also a sure sign if your in the clear or not in relation to Nikasil.
