Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Won't display https pages

    Hi,

Bit of a problem that I can't figure out.

My friend has a laptop, an old work one from his Dad. It has Win XP SP2 installed on it, but, due to it having a copy of windows on it(it is a legit copy) the same as every other of the older work laptops it can't receive windows updates etc...

Basically the problem is that IE6 won't display https pages. Any http page is fine but when a https page is needed it just gives the usual 'Page cannot be displayed' error.

I tried to re-install windows for him (He wanted to wipe the thing anyway) but the BIOS was locked preventing me from setting the CD Drive to the primary boot device. So, in order to rectify this I cracked it open and disconnected the battery the motherboard is attached to in the hope of removing the BIOS password.....no luck. When I put it back together I got the 'date and time not set' message telling me that I was successful when I removed the battery, but, when I tried to get into the BIOS I was again prompted for the password. I tried all the generic usual passwords for it that I found on the net but with no luck.

In the hope that it was just a problem with IE6 I downloaded and installed Mozilla Firefox and Netscape....... both of them couldn't even connect to the net when they were opened! Only IE could connect to the net...

I removed all AV software and firewalls, turned off the windows firewall and tried Mozilla and Netscape again but still no luck, they couldn't connect.

It's an aul head scratcher alright....

I've googled it and there's not much out there to suggest what's going on or how to fix it so.......... Anyone got any ideas on why this is happening and how it might be fixed?

    Thanks in advance.

If it's an old work laptop, check that there are no proxy servers configured.

Also ensure that the time and date are set correctly - if the time and date are wrong, the browser may reject the SSL certs as being wrong.

The Updates issue tells me that his work configured group policy on the machine, and it had been on a domain. It's not easy to reset the group policy when you remove it from a domain, so there could be any one of hundreds of policies affecting his ability to connect.

As you've figured, you need to reinstall. Search the manufacturer's website, they'll usually tell you how to reset the BIOS password.
