Anyone using fastcom in Sligo area?

    Hi,

I just got set up with fastcom today. The installer was a real nice guy and it took about 1 hour to install everything. However I am quite disappointed with the speed I am getting. I just checked a couple of minutes ago at 8pm and all i was getting is 420Kb dl/652Kb ul compared to the advertised speed of 2Mbit/2Mbit. I am not sure if thats due to my connection or it actually might be normal speed for fastcom at the evening where most people use the internet for gaming, downloading etc. The guy who installed the antenna said there were 3 LED's lit up on the antenna and the 4th one was kinda blinking. Thats out of 6 total LED's. So I guess the connection itself should be ok.

I was hoping that some other Fastcom users might check their speed between 6pm - 9pm and let me know what kind of speed they are getting. The average contention of that connection is 24:1.
Also there is no real download limit which concerns me a bit because some people may just download Gigabytes of stuff every day which would certainly explain the slow speeds.

    Thanks

I've been with Fastcom now for about 2 years and while they were a bit patchy at first, lately they have been pretty reliable. I've been getting 1.4 - 1.9mbps up and down consistently for the last 12 months. I have two connections one at home (Leitrim) and one in my office (Sligo) and they are both great. Especially the Sligo site.

    p.s. I don't work for Fastcom........

    Can't second that.
My fastcom download speed is sometimes slower than the dial up. Even @ 1am.
My connection is solid (3 LED's) although I'm close to the edge of their coverage area (according to the map in their office).
Last night for instance download was @122kb/s and upload could not be measured.
    :(

I had a similar problem at the start. I almost cancelled my subscription with them. But before I got the chance we had a storm that damaged the pole which holds the receiver on our chimney. A tech came out and repositioned it and hey presto great signal ever since.

p.s I had a good signal but poor speeds previous. Have you contacted them yet? They are usually pretty helpful, I had a lot of problems at first and I'm sure they thought I was a right pain in the arse but nevertheless they were good to deal with.

Again pretty miserable speed with fastcom today.

Judging by the ping it looks like you have a massive latency problem! On my test you can see the ping is @ 57ms for one test and 85 for the other. Your conection takes up to 10 times longer to get it's download/upload. Have you spoke to Fastcom about this?

STAY AWAY from slowcom. i've had it installed secveral months ago and it worked fine for a while but then the speeds started slowing and now for the last 2 months i've had nothing but problems, peak time speed is like dial up, i've been onto there support alsmost daily with no joy, it gets better for a while but then it returns to the same muck. I'm getting rid of it as have alot of people who had it. SLOW AND UNRELIABLE

I've been with Fastcom since March 2008, built a new house in Achonry 20 miles out from Sligo so it's pretty rural. Eircom muppets couldn't supply broadband - they made me feel like it was the 'outback'. I found Fastcom through a mate and have never looked back, I have consistent speeds of 1.99 -1.95 for Download and similar for upload. In fact it's faster than the Eircom connection I had in Sligo town. A word of warning though, initially I had lag and disconnection problems for months with online gaming(don't ask my age) I also would lose connection while 'surfing' on occassion.
I blamed fastcom for this but knew there was no other provider for my area. I am a bit of an amateur I.T. geek so I acted on a hunch, got rid of my Netgear router and repaced it with a higher spec D-Link router.
It's been perfect ever since. So I would strongly advise people with connection problems to review their router because they can cause serious problems with broadband traffic flow, speeds and connection issues.Do your homework before hand and buy from a specialist website, you'll save a fortune that way. Because in a retail environment most assistants are really clueless and plug their stocked brand. They might intimidate Joe Public with their speak but don't be fooled.

I don't know about your dl speeds, but as of Friday they started packet shaping again. They are notorious for doing it. Happens about every six months or so.

A guy called Dimitri used to be on the ball enough to sort it for you if you called him but he doesn't work their anymore. Unfortunately the people they've got in their tech support department now don't really seem to know what their at.

    Ahh Fastcom.

If people in the country had another option.
