I, unfortunately have been a victim of "prank" calling, as of late. Really starting to get to me. I know I could just switch numbers. But i have done this numerous times in the past!

Is there anything I can do (if anyone knows) to have the culprits dealt with, etc?

    Any help appriciated!

Ring your providing give them the times of the calls. The should be able to block the numbers ringing you.

only thing i can think of is let it go to voice i know meteor have a call back option you never find out their number but you might know the voice?

or else contact your network and report that you are getting harrasing phone calls. see what they can do?

Depending on how bad they are you could always report to the cops

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,333 ✭✭✭tampopo

Make a note of the times and frequency of calls.

Dial 1901 and report it to eircom. Instructions on reporting nuisance calls is in the first few pages of the phone book.

    Stop pi$$ing people off :D:D

Seriosly though if its that much of an issue then maybe you should consider cantacting the guards

    Lol.

I rang Meteor before about it, they merely told me to go to the Guards.

If it gets any worse, I will.

u say u changed yr number numerous times before, was this over prank calls as well??

i say if u have any notion who would be doing this i.e. ex partner, ex work-colleague...then tell them in no uncertain terms that yr going to go to the gaurds about this.

just dont give a reaction and they'll get bored really fast

I have had the same problem of late. Guy ringing to complain that i 'rang him last night and woke the whole house up'....goes on to shout a tirade of abuse at me and call me all sorts of things.
I know I should just hang up, but last time i gave out sh*t to him, don't think that really helped.

Any body have the same guy ringing? He's obviously some nutter who ppicks numbers att random and sees who he can wind up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

Shout out "YOU'VE DRIVEN ME TO THIS!!!!!!!"

Then proceed to play a sound clip of a loud gunshot from your computer speakers and drop the phone on the ground and see what happens.

Forget about the gardai. If you want to find out who is doing it hire a Private Investigator. They will get to the bottom of it much quicker. It will cost you though. Negotiate a fixed price up front.

Cheaper option is to change your SIM.

Alternatively don't answer private numbers. Disable your voice mail and turn off your phone at night. It will cut out 90% of the hassle as people normally make these kinds of calls when drunk i.e. at night.

I have seen this happen before where people were getting calls in the middle of the night but then refused to turn off their phone at night. If you are not prepared to be sensible then the Gardai or PI are the only routes.

Problem is, they ring on a withheld numeber. I could stop answering any withheld numbers but that can be anoying, especially with work commitments.

    Agreed here too.

I had taken to that practice for a while. Shall take it up again now! I briefed my friends etc to have their caller ID switched on when ringing me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,375 ✭✭✭kmick

Let all numbers that are withheld go to voicemail. Simple.

Ah, prank calls. That brings me back. Years ago there was this one guy in my year in school that I expertly caught out. He was always pranking my mobile and I knew it was him but I couldn't prove it cuz he was a sneaky, sly chap. So, one night he's pranking my mobile again and I decided I had enough so I got him into the motion of ringing me constantly and holding him on the line. I sat by my house phone, dialled HIS mobile number but hung up and had it on redial so next time he'd ring I'd have him. Naturally, he pranked me again so I redialed his number and answered my mobile at the same time. Then, I heard his mobile ring in the background and he shouts out "Oh fùck!!!" to which I finally added "See you tomorrow!" and gleefully hung up the phone having finally caught my tormentor.

Needless to say, I met him in the pub the next day and proceeded to kick the shìt out of him. :D

found that difficult to follow but needless to say the idea was genius!!!

Anytime I got prank calls, I just informed the caller that what they are doing is being noted (times, type of call) and with these details you will be going to the Guardai and Phone Operator and will prosecute the offender if it continues. Most stop, some continue and I just make out that the call is being traced - they hang up mostly.

In any event, never rise to them and abuse back. If it gets bad, report it. Your phone provider wont do anything unless the Guards say so.

Ring your providing give them the times of the calls. The should be able to block the numbers ringing you.

You can't block a specific number from calling another specific numbers. It's not supported by the networks nor is a requirments of keeping a license.

Buy a loud whistle and blow it into the phone when they call next. Sore ears will make them think twice about calling you again.

I do the exact same thing, just sit and say nothing, let them talk away and leave the phone off the hook if it's a landline.

With silent calls, I just hang up. They get bored eventually from the lack of reaction. And it could be someone with a dodgy phone, you have to give the benefit of the doubt! Heavy breathers get calmly told that I havent time for this, and I hang up. If its people feeding you a story etc and trying to wind you up, (happens with us a lot in our business for some reason) I string them along for a bit, then tell them ill ring em back cos their number is on my caller id. Even if its not. I dont get many repeat offenders, thankfully.

Whatever you do, dont give an emotional response to them, thats usually what they want. Just be calm and hang up as quickly as possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Q_Ball

I'll answer and say hello, because there are a few people (with landlines mainly) who come up as withheld. If they're prank callers i just put the phone down somewhere and come back to it later. my reasoning being that the prank callers sound young, therefore safe to assume they are more than likely on a pay-as-you-go tarriff. The longer they kep waffling, the more of their credit it wastes to not get a reaction.

As a matter of fact, my refridgerator wasn't running properly. You've saved me quite a bit of water damage. Thank you anonymous caller.

I'd guess thats a recorded thing.
I used to prank freinds with a ''I wanna buy your car'' recording. :D
But again, dont say a thing, dont hang up, waste their credit as much as you can.

I know the number of the guy that's doing it to me, and when those push sms's come along I change the number in the web address to his rather than mine so hopefully he gets subscribed to all sorts of ****e.

if you happen to know his name, address and date of birth you should be able to get a replacement sim with his number on it and then ring a few sex chat lines for an hour at a time

Keep them on the line for as long as you can, hit them im the pocket ... ?

Occasionally, usually the odd Sunday nite, I get pranked in work with fellas asking for Porn to be handing discreetly to them in 5 mins. i usually string them along if it's quiet but if there's customers i tell them and ahng up. They usually ring back within secs, but i ignore the phone.

However, we expereinced some late-nite pranking at home last year/the year before. Some1 rang at 3 Am every few days and wouldn't say a thing. we suspected it to be my brother's then GF but we never said anything. It eventually stopped.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 966 ✭✭✭GerryRyan

My gf used to get a few prank calls of a lad from her old estate, late enough at night and all, just shouting abuse down the phone. Headcase to say the least and she knew exactly who it was.

The one time I was there she handed me the phone, I just quoted his address to him and he hasn't been heard from since.

OP - you say you know the person?
Make it known to the caller you are recording the times and content of the calls or messages ...

What sort of gimp leaves their mobile phone turned on at night?

Staff on call, night shift workers, those without landlines etc ;)

As for prank calls, play a recording of the ring tone they may never realise that the phone has answered and draining their credit.
