the ramones near enough 'invented' punk, along with the MC5, television, pattie smith and the stooges
Ok maybe 'invent punk' was a poor choice of words.. But they were one of the 1st to have a major influence on the genre

Yeah, the Replacements are vastly underated. More people need to listen to Let It Be.

To sum it all up, it seems clear that the Clash are by far the best band ever to make punk music, but because they branched out they aren't the 100% punkest punk band ever. Bad Religion seem to be the punk purists choice, with honourable mentions for Dead Kennedys, Minutemen, SLF and the Ramones.

Does anyone think the Pogues were punk?

I'd consider the Pogues to be folk punk.

Which is a type of punk, yeah?

Surely there aren't many punk bands who couldn't be accused of being punk/rock, folk/punk, punk/metal, or punk/pop.

Are we only considering bands who were 100% punk/punk and never played an un-punk-like note in all their punk lives?

    That's punked up.

There is no greatest punk band but Iggy and the Stooges are the creators. I just like all punk silly getting into who was the best cos nobody will agree. The Clash musically were classic but as has been pointed out not a pure punk band.

Seriously. How many of you have actually attended a local punk gig? I hate being the elitist twat in the corner munching over "the old days" (not that I was there or anything), but all I see is a list of MTV has-beens.

As far as I know, there aren't any local punk gigs around where I live. I don't even know anyone else that listens to punk rock.
