This was one of the very first things I thought of when I heard about the Wiimote. It had to be done.

Im not convinced about the wii at all. When you move the wii-mote through the its interpreted as a button press. It doesnt know where it is in 3d space so its not like you would have complete control over the light sabre, each time you swing, it would be like pressing an 'attack' button. Similar to how it was done in Zelda...which was crap.

Well that's not entirely true. Think of Tiger woods. It uses the gyroscopes to map the movement and it works pretty well. There are motion sensors in 3 planes so it should be able to map the movement well enough. Zelda didn't choose to go this route as it wasn't in keeping with the game style - similar to lego star wars in that there are set moves you can make.

    I really hope it's a FPS

Well it kinda does know where it is in 3d space, depending on where the remote was when it was initialised.

Depending on how close it percieves the LED's to be like

    Exactly.
To the best of my knowledge Zelda games never had much of a fight system, just a single action button for attacking.

Even games like Wii Sports, which are just tech demos in reality, show the wiimote working in a more detailed way than just a swing = hit dynamic.
