The tracker and stock levels on Expansys are fcuking ridiculous! I ordered the bundle deal a week ago and the wait time has been yo-yoing up and down all week.

The code names are explained here.
Bora only applies to the new OS for the n800 and the hacker edition (I think).

edit: found how to add above to app manager. have installed i think (?) gregale free and non free. (What happened to mistreal or bora?) Anyway. still can't install evince after that.. getting same error as above about missing lib... [scratches head...]

Did you have a look at J-blk’s post here?
Have you both of those packages added and do you still get the problem?

I wonder if the missing libraries are in different packages and, depending on what packages you have installed, you can be lucky or unlucky in getting something to work??

The repostitories I have currently "installed" are listed below. Hopefully it might be some assistance in debugging your problem.

Did anyone manage to get Skype working on the 770?
    http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/mobile/n800/

I'm still waiting for mine to ship :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭quintron

    Cheers again DB!
I will add them all tonight when I get home. I tried adding a couple of extras and I got a message "unable to refresh package list, reverting to last saved package" or something like that. Anyway, cheers for posting repository links up. I'll add them later. Should solve the problem.
    Cheers again.

Unfortunately Skype only works on the newer Nokia 800.

Yep. I have been reading around a hell of a lot to find out if this is possible, but I think it's a question of developing specific codecs for the 770's hardware which doesn't look like it will be done.

There might be a glimmer of hope in in the OS2007 Hackers Edition which is developed (tho not supported) by Nokia. The aim of this firmware is to try to bridge the gap between the nokia 800 and the 770. It still looks unlikely that skype will work on a version of this tho.

I had hoped to have skype (i have ordered my 770 but not yet received it), but I might look at Gizmo instead (VOIP application for 770). Has anyone tried this and what is the call quality like compared to skype?

Also, In my attempt to justify my whimsical purchase I was also looking to the 770 as a sort of front end (in my living room) to my music collection (on my computer in my bedroom). From what I have read this seems to be possible. There is an application called Canola which seems to do what I need, altho I would need to have my computer turned on and have it running a little upnp server.
    Has anyone attempted this?

    "Dear Sir,

Pls be advised that there has been a delay in the transit of the nokia 770’s.
Stock is now due to arrive in 7 days.
We do apologize for any inconvenience that this delay has caused.

The error you are getting happens because of either a typo in one your repositories or simply a bad repository (yes, even some of the maemo links are broken). DeepBlue's advice should get you well on your way - Evince drove me nuts getting it installed, but I'm glad I persisted - it's a nice app.

Try this to troubleshoot: enter your application manager and start disabling all the repositories (you don't need to delete them, just uncheck the "Enabled" box) except the two first Tableteer ones (note that disabling the repositories does not affect your installed applications, but it does affect auto updating them).

Now, add (or enable) the two repositories I originally posted about (and DB pointed you to):

    Web address http://repository.maemo.org/extras/
    Distribution gregale
    Components free non-free

    Web address http://repository.maemo.org/
    Distribution gregale
    Components free non-free

So now, you should only have 4 enabled repositories. Close the application catalog, let it refresh and assuming it does so correctly, go to install new applications and try to install Evince (0.90 I think) which should now be in the list.

Assuming you get Evince installed, start re-enabling your other repositories one or two at the time, until you find what is breaking the refresh.

Hey dal, got this working. Installed Canola on the 770 and then installed the Simplecenter UPnP server on my PC where music library is and selected the required folders to share. Pretty simple really. Only thing it cant see are the itunes playlists, artists and albums are seen fine.

Cheers DB for link to J-blk's post and J-blk to yourself for reiterating here same.

This is the one that solved it for me:
    Web address http://repository.maemo.org/
    Distribution gregale
    Components free non-free

Basically the root before extras folder.
After adding that one, Evince installed fine!
Jaysus took some poking though over the past few days for a simple app install.
    Cheers all for assistance!

    Brilliant, thanks for the reply.

Is it fast? Does it need to buffer the songs before playing them? Do you see yourself using this much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

Its fast alright. Buffering takes only 1 or 2 seconds. Cant see myself using it much for streaming or normal playing as I have an ipod also. Still handy to have the option.

What I would prefer to use would be the radio player. Cant get any irish or uk stations to work with it.

Aw no! That's one of the reasons that I am buying it. I have just recently moved up north and would love to listen to phantom fm around the house using this.

    What stations have you tried?

    [EDIT]
Actually, just had a look around and it looks like I .asx is not supported for the 770, but .aac (which phantom fm streams in) is supported. I don't have my 770 yet so I can't confirm this.

Also according to this post, all the shoutcast stations (some 17,000+) should play on the 770.

    Also, good FAQ here.

TBH I saw the shoutcast site but just didnt look into it enough. Will do though.

I tried RTE ones, Today FM, BBC ones, Virgin and Newstalk.

Going to keep looking around though and try to find a few I like. Will post here if/when I do.

Please do.. I'd love to add a few without the grief of having to go searching for ages, and lots of trial and error..

Particularly if you find working feeds from BBC R1 and R5, which don't require a UK IP address or Proxy.

Has anyone been able to get it to boot from a memory card? The stupid thing will not work for me, I can't get it to find and install e2fsprogs. I'm starting to feel like a bit of an idiot :(

And funky, they never asked for anything like that with me, anyway..

Yeah, I got it to work second time around... first time I screwed up and messed up on formatting the second MMC partition. I followed this guide:

    http://examplified.net/guide/Nokia_770/Booting_from_MMC/

I have a 2GB MMC so I followed it to the letter - you would need to adjust it for a 1GB. I had the repository needed for e2fsprogs so I didn't need to install anything.

Now to install the 2007 Hacker Edition and try dual booting...

Funkyflea, did you give Expansys a delivery address different from the billing address for the credit card used? That may be why they are doing an address check.

I have a 2gb card, too, that is the exact tutorial I was trying to follow, but I'm having absolutely no joy :( Dunno what is up with it, error message changes every time I try :)

No, I gave expansys the same address. Also I noticed in their email, the word 'genuine' was spelt wrong.. Probably nothing.

Dunno. They didn't ask me but then again the delivery address is an extremely reputable place ;) and I used Paypal.

Their stock level system seems to be all over the plaice and is a bit of a cod. Yesterday the items were 5 & 7 days respectively and 1 item could be part shipped (for a mere 13euro25..). This morning the order was waiting to be packed and shipped. Now they are 7 & 14 days respectively and still available for part-shipping (again for a mere 13euro25).

To be honest, I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. Minimal improvements booting from MMC speed wise. Ok, you have more room for apps, but not much else so I'm starting to wonder what the point is..

I'm starting to hit the limits with this device and kind of seeing why it didn't do too well at its' original price. Still liking it but.. it could be a lot better.

Installed the 2007 HE OS too - feels a bit faster, has some nice touches but still, crashes a lot.

Most frustrating of all, Evince has turned out to be rubbish with CBR/CBZ files and crashes every three pages or so. Increasing the swap file doesn't help either. Oddly enough, some people claim it works fine for them on the Internet Tablet Talk forums but no joy... So I think I'm gonna stick with what this device is good at... Good luck getting the OS installed on the MMC if you still want to try it.

Aww, don't get disillusioned, at least yours is working ;) I find the speed grand on it anyway, so it wasn't that, it's the room for apps thing that I'm aiming for. That, and I don't like when technology beats me?!? Will keep plugging away if it means that I'm gadding about with the same problem til I'm old and grey!

Is it worth the exta 100 quid ?

Totally agree. It was always too expensive at the original price point.
We are all so used to filling empty hardware vessels like Palms, Windows, Symbian phones with "essential" 3rd party software etc.
I think most 3rd party apps for this device only serve to slow it down and make it cumbersome to use. It can't handle it simply. At least not reliably imho.
It was not designed to be used for office apps, etc etc so I have stripped mine back down to just built in apps + FBreader, Xournal and some games and use it for what I initially purchased it for, a good ebook reader with a great screen for decent money... and go back to my tinkering with Symbian :)
Still happy. Its a great unit. Just don't think of it as a PDA!

I've been asking myself that - most comments on other forums seem to indicate that Maemo Mapper with any GPS is a better combo. And Maemo Mapper is free - still, you would need to download maps in advance or tether it to a phone and use GPRS. There was also a post awhile back for a GPS receiver you can pick up for €60 or so delivered - I'm considering that option but still not sure.

Quackles, yeah, still liking the device just a bit dissapointed with Evince - it just looks so good and navigation for CBR/CBZ files is superb but unfortunately, the device just can't take it it seems or the application is really bad. Impossible to tell without knowing how an N800 behaves.

Quintron, I agree, using the device for its' intended purposes is the way to go - and at €130, I still think it was totally worth it. Still, having the option to install all kinds of things is interesting at least - too bad so much does not work to a usable enough degree.

BTW, anyone have any recommendations for converting PDF to CHM? I love the way FBReader handles my CHM files but have a number of PDF technical books I would like to go through and having them in CHM would be so much easier.

I have a GPS receiver that i got from ebay for €50 delivered and i am using maemo mapper and i find it pretty good, if you install a program called FLITE you can get voice prompted directions. I have been thinking about getting the Navicore software but i reckon its a bit too pricy for what it is! Id like to try it for 30 days for free but unfortunately they dont do that!

After reading all the pro's and con's I am drooling with the idea of buying one of these beauties. Exactly for that reason I am going to hold for a couple of days to see if the feeling remains - I did too many impulse buys before and my drawers are full of idle gadgets that don't go far enough... :o

Right now I see this as a potential good car solution to provide digital music playback connected to my car stereo and as a GPS receiver with voice support (I will acquire a BT GPS receiver). The wifi would be used to connect to my home network and update the music library before I leave.

I have a few doubts about this solution and wonder if anyone has tried it out:

    - Car charger - can they be purchased somewhere?
    - Car holder - anyone come across one?
    - Audio quality - does it provide a good sound quality?
    - Processing power - would the N770 be able to handle music playback and GPS running at the same time?

Any other points I should consider?
