    hi there,
having a problem with my dad's laptop.

he had windows 2000 installed and it all went terribly wrong...
wireless and wired internet connections would not work.

i suggested he install win xp and remove everything on it already.

his company will not allow him to format the laptop.
we installed xp as a second boot os last night.

wired connection works fine now so thats a start.
the wireless however wont work. we tried a belkin wireless g notebook card,
and a netgear usb wireless pen.

when connecting, it finds the router, but wont connect. we enter the wep key and it sits there saying "connecting"
we used the software that came with both wireless adapters and then we used the windows wireless connection program.
    same results from all 3.
i cant access the router config page using wireless.
but there is communication between the router and the laptop.
    ping returns 100% loss.
no firewall and windows firewall disabled.

any ideas on what could be wrong?

Access the router config page via the wired connection and check if 'mac address filtering' is enabled. If it is either disable it or enter the mac address of the wireless device. It's usually on a sticker on the device itself.

Have you tried ipconfig/release or /renew?

When inside the router configuration, can you see the PC on the DHCP client list?

Reading your post fully this time it loks like you've got an IP address prob.
