News story in Limerick not so long ago featured a Rifle that
was seized by the GARDA. The news storys around the time I
heard valued the setup ranging from 14k to 17k.
Anyway on the paper today they have a picture of the setup
and the estimate the value of it at 10K!!!!!!

It looks like a remington 700 with a rusty barrel.
It looks like there are actual rust spot along it.
Someone in work today mentioned it was a .220 Swift.
The papers said the scope was worth 4000 Euro!!!

Now I know there is no link between the Crime and us Shooters
here so my post is not intended at discussing crime at all.
(so there should be no need to lock the thread)
I simply want to know the ACTUAL value of the setup of the gear
to see how wrong the papers got it. Simple as that.

I have an edited pic here without the news story:

If people are interested in the news-story "without" needing to discuss the crime aspect of it I have a link to it here:

I saw that article reported last week in the Mail. I would say the papers have added an extra zero on the value of the scope and the rifle, typical of them. They might also have been guided by the Garda as to what value is is worth and they might have plucked a figure out of the sky. As to what it is, I'm not sure. I thought it might be a .223 or similar.

    Hi Bullets,
No point in blanking the poets face out .He is to be seen in my post.:D
[Should we combine this thread MODS?]

Anyway,Est for that set up about 1,200 to 1,400 Euros NEW!!!
Dont see how what looks like A nikon scope can be 4K! The most intresting things are the stock and the barrel which looks like a graphite lightweight barrel, that might be threaded. All in all it looks like a set up somone invested a few quid in. idnt pick very well INMHO for aself defence weapon.Unless he was going to pick them off at the Treaty stone.

    Reckon the
other rags picked up the story and syndicated it verbatim.
NO WAY is that set up worth that money!! I know the crowd who took that pic,i'll see if I can get a clearer pic of this 14k rifle..

Only saw CG had posted a pic before me a while ago.

Yeah agree on that extra zero!, in the Value of the rifle
as I reckoned only about 1200 at the very most.
I dont know what the scope is but its defo not 4000 Euro.

The rounds in the belt I cant make out. They dont look like .223's
IMO but I cant make out what they could be.

The whole set up IMHO is 2grand or under.

From looking at the picture on the papers today the rifle looks
as though it was not looked after. The springs on the bi-pod are
a rusty orange in colour and on the actual barrel of the rifle it
does look like there are rust spots on the barrel and the reciever.
It could be painted up or phosphated and then painted although I doubt it
but it looks like rust as if it was sitting in storage
without any care for a long period of time. Would not personally
    want to chance fireing it!!!

Nicked guns are never really looked after. As I found out when I ID my nicked shotgun in Henry St many years ago, which usually features on RTE stock footage of "gun crime":( .tHat Remmy isnt in that bad a condition compared to much of the scrap recoverd by ther Gardai.

did you get the gun back CG?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,843 ✭✭✭Clare gunner

Nope!It wasaWinchester 1300XTR pump action that was nicked.I was able to pos ID it because of a repair I did on the slide bars. But it had been cut down to pistol size, and had been badly stored in a plastic bag wwhich had leaked water .The gun was ruined.Despite that I wanted it back as it would have been salaveagble. No dice. It was an ilegal firearm, despite I pointed out that the only illegal thing was the short barrel, which was replaceable, with a legal 24in+ barrel.Am still P"££$D off, every time I see it on RTENews or Primetime gun footage.

From what i can see it is a Model 700 VS, and that particular model was only produced in .223, .220 swift, .22-250, and .308. I'd put my money on ot being a swift. I agree with CG that the scope looks like a Nikon, my Bro has a nikon very similar to that which he paid $300 for in Oz.

1400euro for the lot i reckon.

    CG,

    You have my sympathy.:(

worth peanuts as its in terrible condition

Just to my lay eyes but does the scope not look like a S&B

Its got the little circle on the side turret, picture doesn't show full scope but if I was asked to guess what type of scope it was from that pic alone I would have said S&B

That pic was in the star about 2 weeks ago i think but they had a very clear photo of it id say its definitly a schmidt&bender scope and its a fairly high mag one to with a 30mm tube. id say the true price of the setup is about €3.800 or there abouts where they came up with 14k i dont know:rolleyes: Waste of a very nice rifle:(
