A cable snapped in the mechanism for the driver's side window of my Renault Laguna. This is not an electrical cable, but more like a brake cable on a bicycle. I called Renault and they said that I would have to replace the whole mechanism (Over €300 plus VAT:( ).
Does anyone know if this is absolutely necessary or if it is possible to replace the cable only?
    Thanks,

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Happened to me in my '96 BMW 7-series. Cost about the same for a complete new lifting mechanism. My trusted specialist didn't wanna know about replacing the cable

On practically all makes of car the whole mechanism needs to be replaced. It may be possible to replace the cable, but the dealer won't be able to supply the cable. It could also be a very tricky job.

Personally, I'd just have the mechanism replaced and wouldn't even attempt replacing the cable.

Same here. I did however have a quick look and it didn't seem to be an impossible job for someone who's DIY handy (and has a limited budget). Nothing much to lose if it doesn't work!

The cable looked similar (slightly thicker) than one used for the gears / brakes on a bicycle

Would they not use something more durable? On mine the cable was broken (wear and tear). It is amazing it actually lasted 10 years / 130k miles

Just called the breakers yard on the West Pier in DunLaoghaire and they said that they never get the unit from crashed cars but they actually make their own for €150. Gonna call down to him to take a look!
