I have a flat garage roof which makes the inside very cold in winter. What would be the most effective way of insulating it? Could I insulate it from the outside and also between the joists. Best materials to use?

We had this problem with a garage that had been converted to a room, but it was so cold that it was not useable. If you know how the roof is constructed you might be able to blow insulation between the beams. Or you could remove the ceiling and put insulation in before reslabbing. You can't really insulate from the outside unless you put another roof over.
    In the end we:
took out the (horrible stippled) ceiling and put in insulation before it was re-slabbed. Put a sloping tiled roof over the flat garage roof (though that was mainly cosmetic). Had the house walls insulated and this meant that the two exposed side walls of the garage were insulated. Took up the floor and put insulation between the beams (it was concrete with a suspended floor over it). Got the rad fixed - it was only partially working. Its now the warmest room in the house!

If you change your roof from flat to pitched, you may need planning permission - check with your local authority.

If for whatever reason, you want/need to keep it flat, you could also insulate OVER the flat roof with, for example, Dow roofmate, and re-roof over that. Then, fill the joists as well - this way you'd prevent the cold from bridging into the room at all, which is best.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
