I've started a job up in the airport, and I've heard stories about what people do up here in Dublin, some good some bad, and I'd like to hear what end users think.

What are your experiences with bringing wheelchairs through Dublin Airport? Do you find the escorts good/bad/indifferent? How about how a wheelchair going into the hold? Has it come the other side unscathed? Electric wheelchairs pose a problem?

Oh, and just in case you use these on electric wheelchairs, I'd like to put out a message:
Do not bring wet cell batteries to the airport (ones with acid in them), these are classed as prohibited items, and they will be confiscated!!

I did hear one nightmare story from a reliable source of a wheelchair user who was forced to crawl through the security scanner!

Considering how putting humans through x-ray machines at airports is an instant dismissal offence, does anyone have a credible experience they can relate?

    Hi Gablin

After a bad operation I was commuting thru Dublin to EMA Nottingham every weekend for about 2 months in a wheelchair. I never had the same person twice but I found them all fantastic - and I'm a tough one to please!
My advice is to ring ahead and pre book the assistance.

I was flying with Ryanair... Only airline to fly directly to EMA... they have a button to click on to pre order it. I was usually wheeled through the priority door (the entrance to the side of the main security check)

It was the flight assistants who were nasty, unhelpful and rude. And older people! They didn't think I should have been allowed to board before them, even though I had arrived early and had priority seating. As a disabled or partially disabled passenger you must not block other passengers from safely exiting the plane in case of an emergency ie you need to have a row to yourself or have a window seat. Plus most airlines have a maximum amount of 'passengers requiring assistance' that they can have on board at any one time.

Thankfully the passengers around me were lovely. Hope this is of some help to you.

Wow! That is completely different to what I've heard as regards experience! Thanks PTB, good to hear you've had a good experience yourself.

Just for the record, I never mentioned an x-ray machine. But I do see that you were really looking for feedback on the escort services - apologies for clogging up your thread.

I've recently returned from a short holiday in the UK. I flew with Ryanair. I booked my assistance to get me on the plane which went fine. When I came home however, I discovered that the f**ker who put my wheelchair into the luggage hold, removed the armrests, and I haven't seen them since. When I arrived back in Dublin a few days later, the chair was waiting for my at the steps of the plane, SANS ARMRESTS!!!! I have put in a claim for damage to my chair, so we'll see how that goes...........!??
