    When landlords state that they want references what do they mean by that?

    Is it proof that you are working and a note from a previous landlord saying that you paid your bills on time and didn't blitzkreig the place?

    What should one produce for a reference if say, one is moving away from the parents in that case?

    Probably work references in addition to a nice note from a previous landlord saying you paid the rent on time and kept the place in good order. I'm sure if it's your first rental, they will cut you some slack.
