iPod headphones from America seem faulty

I bought a pair over there about 3 months ago and already the grey rubbery part surrounding each bud is worn and kind of fraying. Obviously I can't return them to the store in America - can Apple here do anything? PS I'm not tight, I'm a student. Not the same thing at all lol.
