Best 4X4 for practicality

Im looking at getting some sort of 4X4 which would be comfortable enough for long journeys or the odd day commuting but pratical enough for carrying heavy goods etc.

The plan is to have something that could be slept in, or attach a 4X4 tent to the rear tailgate etc. I also do some mountain biking and would like to be able to put the bikes on the back etc.

My main driver is a cooper s, but with biking, the guitar and a couple of other work related stuff, i find myself borrowing other cars all the time, it would be nice to have something like this there. Looking to spend about 10K - 15K

Any suggestions? Was thinking of a toyota hilux surf or something similar??

3.0 litre V6s are going for very small money and are generally very well specified. Has roof bars so expect you'd put the bikes up there.

I drove most of the 4x4s/pick-up when I was buying. I found the Navara Crewcab to be the nicest to drive. Honest John comments on them being nice to drive also.

Something like this would be an ideal stablemate to a Mini.

Subaru Forester? Or if you don't actually go offroad, there are a range of estates that might do the job - Mercedes, Volvo, VW Passat etc.

They're pretty rough. Badly-built, uncomfortable, poor-handling and unsafe. Most 4x4s in the OP's price bracket will drive like dogs, particularly in comparison to the Cooper S. The only exceptions I can think of are the Forester and perhaps an AWD Volvo.
