That does look extremely good RE*AC*OR.

Fooked my old espresso machine in the bin at the weekend, it wasn't great. I'm on the moka pot at the minute as well as a coffee machine(doesn't do espresso's). I'm going to decide on a budget for a new machine and start researching. I'll be re-reading a lot of threads here too.

here you go you deviants, while we wait on others...

this is 100% Indian Peaberry Bold. Its a lovely lovely coffee. The colour of the crema is much more uniform, and I think its a little lighter in texture than the first one...

OK - here's a double ristretto pulled into my new bodum pavina glasses for a bit more visibility.

This is the last video I'll post unless some of you other guys step up.

    COOOFFFFFEEEEEEEEE

My lovely little Briel is in my folks-in-law's house back in Ireland.

I'm halfway across the world with nothing but a drip filter thing. *cry*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

What model Briel do you have Shabadu?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,659 ✭✭✭Shabadu

    This one: http://www.briel.pt/en/produtos_wpptpopqa.html

I'd class it as a nice entry level espresso machine. It made much better coffee than the francis-francis we had before.

    NOOoooo.

Keep sticking them up. I'm buyinhg my new machine this week (it's looking like the Gaggia Classic in BT for €300, unless you guys recommend different...)so I should have one up before the week's out.

There's only so many times you can see an espresso pulled from the same machine.

I'm very happy with my Classic, and at €300 that's even cheaper than mine went for, and mine was a bargain. You heard all the other recommendations for howard when he was buying his, but I guess his budget was bigger. If you wanna go for something different there are options... online.

The FrancisFrancis X3 got a nice review from Coffeegeek....

    x3.jpg

You can get that for about €300.

My Kitchen is in bits at the moment, so I'm without! I'll get a sneaky clip online before the weekend if possible. I like your little shot glasses RE*AC*TOR :)

    Cheers

    Howard,

You get a chance to try out the grinder before the kitchen work?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭hshortt

Nope Gran Hermano, it's still in the box! shocking I know.... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

They look nice, but to be perfefctly honest, I prefer my little porcelain demitasse cups. The crema seems to hold up better in them, I think the pavina glasses are just too smooth, there's no adherence to the walls.

    Still great for making videos

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

Espresso Con Panna - the Bodum Pavina Glasses are made for this.

A lot of people like espresso con panna to be made with whipped cream, I don't, pouring cream all the way, double cream if possible (these pics were made with single).

They look good RE*ACT*OR. Pity the dial-ups.. :D

Just back from BT. Purchased the Gaggia Classic. Paid €350, the brushed chrome was €50 more expensive than the black version. I also purchased a couple of coffee's from Bewleys on Grafton St when I was in town.

I'll hopefully get it set up tonight and report back with some porn.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭hshortt

You'll be chuffed with it Mr. Magnolia, I think the black one looks very plastic. Also the portafilter spouts ARE plastic which just ruins it in my opinion.

So, how wired are you going to be tonight?

    Toodles :)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

Depends how quick I can get away from work and how much advise I can gather here about setting it up correctly :). I did think it was worth the €50 to avoid the black one alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

There's a black gaggia classic? Black plastic? Like the old gaggia espresso? Plastic spouts? WTF!

The option was there. She actually made an espresso for me using it.

RE*AC*TOR - Where oh where did you buy the Bodum Pavina Glasses?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

    ordered them from hasbean.co.uk :)

not sure if any of the usual bodum places in dublin have them, but I was ordering other stuff from hasbean anyway, so said why not. Usually takes about 2-3 days for delivery from hasbean.

    Thank you Sir!

So, about 13 seconds. Dial that MC2 alot finer for a start.

Was that a double basket? Volume looks a little on the large side too, you should roughly know on your cup where 2oz or 60ml is for a double.

Anyway, go again but grind alot finer, to try get roughy 60ml in roughly 25 seconds. + or - 10ml and 5 secs should be fine.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

Thanks for the advice RE*AC*TOR. It was the first of many I'll get to work and report back soon :)

It was the double basket btw.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

    Sorted, well impressed I am.

Have 60ml in ~23seconds now. It did take a lot of fiddling and a lot of coffee to get the correct grind. I'll hopefully get another youtube link up tonight. Thanks again RE*AC*TOR, going to buy some of those Bodum Pavina Glasses, they look good.

    How's the home roasting going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

Well that's one of the toughest parts done. The Bodum Pavina's are nice, and will be my first choice for con pannas. But I still prefer white porcelain demitasse. Its a different experience.

The roasting is interesting, I am starting to appreciate how the one bean will taste really good with one roast, and will taste mediocre or worse with another roast. The iRoast itself is most of the time good and easy to use.

I had one of those. I bought it in march and it went RIP last week. It still functions fine for espressos but there is not enough steam to do cappuccinos which is mainly what I use it for. The supplier, fairfax coffee in uk, says briel can't repair or replace it so fairfax is giving me full refund or a discount against an order for a replacement machine (they have offered several to choose from). I am viewing all these threads (all LOL) before deciding what to do next.

    Apologies about the orientation :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

Is that a demi-tasse cup? It could be the camera angle, or the shape of the cup, but it looks larger?

    Estimate of final volume?

I thought it looked blonde at the start, but it may well be the lighting.

Oh and for the sake of completion I'll post this here as well (description in the other thread).

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

It started black alright :) Maybe the lighting..

    Final volume was 3floz's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

3flozs is 1floz too much for a double. Which is 50% out. You still need a finer grind.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

Okily dokily. I'll keep adjusting. Thanks!

Edit/ Going to order some new espresso cups tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 99 ✭✭banaco73

Hi where are you going to get the cups from?

I called to the bewleys in blackrock and he has a good selection there was so many the i got confussed.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

I'll probably have a look through the online shops listed here.

See what I like and decide if it's a fair price. I'll let you know what I decide but TBH it'll be this evening or tomorrow morning before I get a chance to have a look.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

Got the measureometer (jug) out tonight. That was actually 2.5fl oz's in around 27secs so I think I'm on the right track :)

Still have to buy a nice set of 2oz cups though.
