Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Oh nice.
What machine are you using there?

The naked PF makes all the difference. It introduces you to the pain on correct tamping technique :D

Only a couple of fissures, but the extraction was far too long. It'll really aid espresso perfection. Practice makes perfect.:)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,437 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

I'd always stop it 25/27 seconds after you begin on that machine. For a double espresso you should be using about 16g of coffee and filling 2oz of espresso in 25 seconds. If it's flowing too fast (which it is there) grind a little finer or dose more coffee. It takes a long time to perfect and you'll never stop adjusting so keep at it.

    16g - 2oz - 25sec.

    Enjoy!

Just curious - do you time a shot from the moment you switch the machine on, or from when the espresso begins to pour?

From the moment you flick the brew switch.

I don't have my scanner handy at the moment, so here's a quick webcam grab of a Polaroid from 3FE today. Colours are still settling, so I'm hoping the browns will pop a wee bit more before it finishes...

how you getting on with the vario? I've been using a hario skerton for the last few months as the electric grinder I have isn't really up to the espresso task. Thinking of getting a vario some time before christmas.

I hate when it runs back up the handle! I was getting a lot of that kind of thing and two things helped:

    1. Flicking the doser all the time while the grinder is running (having weighed the right amount for a shot into the hopper) and

    2. (More controversially) nutating tamp.

Nice videos, I really like the 2 with the naked portafilter, however I never seem to get the single stream of coffee from the centre, usually it's 2 or 3 streams of coffee. I'm guessing that is a consequence of not tamping correctly or something?

Also in the first video there appears to be a Nescafe Gold Blend beside the espresso machine, this kind of ruins the mood a samll bit...

Using a naked portafilter is a bit of a hit and miss sometimes. In my experience is all up to thickness, pressure, and amount of coffee!

Yeah, unfortunately not everyone in work appreciated the freshly ground coffee.

Tamping if often the main reason for the streams not combining. It can also be caused by machine issues such as pressure drops and also grind size.
Naked PF's are great practise, and some find the cup better as its untainted by the metal of the PF.
