This should be interesting to say the least. A positive move I think..

A MAJOR €750m development for Dublin city centre has been given the green light.

The development of the so-called Northern Quarter will see the construction of 47 new shops, 175 apartments and a four-star hotel.

Dublin City Council gave Arnotts planning permission for the plans to change the area bounded by Henry street, O'Connell street, Abbey street and Liffey street. The redevelopment will also include 14 new cafes along with a 149-bed hotel.

The planning permission for the venture was granted on the basis that a "strategic partner" for the project be appointed, of which Arnotts says negotiations are at an advanced stage.

It is expected that work on the new area will start in the second half of 2008.

"The Northern Quarter will write the next chapter in the evolving history of Dublin city, retaining the charm of an open-street environment with the dynamism of a modern European capital," said executive chairman of Arnotts, Richard Nesbitt.

"This development puts the focus back on the city as a shopping area par excellence."

"Ultimately cities are about people and the Northern Quarter will be built with people at its heart."

Prince's street, which runs off O'Connell street to the back of the former Independent News and Media offices, will become a full urban street and pedestrian thoroughfare.

It's good to see that area being opened up. Hopefully they'll get the Carlton one up and running soon too.
