Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Where to buy a decent but easy on the wallet suit?

New job requires a new suit, or two. So looking for decent places to buy and what would be considered a decent price?

I'm in South Dublin, all that's available to me is Black Tie, which comes across as a bit too formal and expensive, and Best's Menswear. Although there is a place in the Omni that i may take a trip to tomorrow.

I've never bought a suit before so any tips welcome.

Saw a few nice suits on sale in Debenhams, Blanch last week.

You cannot go wrong with Marks and Spencer. Brilliant selection, you should get a suit for under €200. They stock several colours and shapes, are excellent quality, and sell all the necessary accessories too, i.e. cufflinks, ties, tiepins, shirts, shoes, etc.

Marks and Sparks definitely. Look fine for the price especially if you're only wearing them in work every day.

    Should sticky this tbh...

Best's in Northside Shopping Center in Coolock (bit scarey if you travelling from South Dublin, but worth it). They have all the sale stuff from local stores, it seems, and its a 'great, great shopping center' (early '90's 2FM anyone...).

Otherwise Boyer's (don't laugh) it has all the Arnott's post sale items so you can get a Magee for €150 on occasions..

In both cases I'm thinking €400-€500 suits for €150-€250 so it depends on what you're after.

I reckon the more you pay the better it wears.

Check out John Howards (I think!) on Baggott St (beside Searsons). I got a couple of suits from them recently and the service was top notch and the cost reasonable. I would definately recommended them and I think they might also have a sale on at the moment. They were recommended to me by a guy who has been with them for years

M&S are good too but if you are a little tall, wide, short, etc I find the fit is just a little off.

Thanks to all, in the end i went to Blanchardstown. M&S wasn't that great i thought, they had some decent suits but none my size. I've discorved that my blazer size is 52, of which there was none in M&S. However i did buy a nice shirt there.

Debenhams, was ok, saw one lovely suit, but again it wasn't my size.

In the end i bought in Burtons, two really nice suits, both only 144 each.

Bought new shoes in Clarks and they actually had what i wanted in a size 13!! which is rare in my experience.

So, overall, two suits, approx 3 shirts and ties, shoes and socks for around 450. Not to bad at all.

    Thanks.

You shouldn't have to buy clothes for a job, thats daft, just tell them you don't have a suit and if it's required they should supply it.

Just spotted the above post, 450 quid on clothes for work, thats crazy, bring the receipts into work and ask them for the money

I would not advise this. Presumably MooseJam is trying to wind you up.

    Please tell me you're kidding!

Have you EVER done that yourself?

Oh, and that doesn't include asking for money back on your McUniform...

You know, Tesco does suits that look grand from a distance. I have never got up close so cant be sure.

Ah well.. you are all sorted now.

I like Moosejams idea though. Walk in on your first day and say "Sorry i have no clothes other than what i wore at the interview so i went out and bought clothes to wear to work and here are the reciepts :D"

What would be a good store in Dublin where the staff would be happy to help you out in picking a suit? I probably need to be getting a suit myself soon enough (interviews and the like) and I'm about as simple as it comes when it comes to suits.

Friend needed a reasonably priced suit and went downstairs in Arnotts recently. He said the assistant was very attentive about finding him a decent fit and explaining about a matching shirt and tie etc.

Marx Y Sparxx - easy on the wallet, relatively decent quality and let's be honest, you're not going to be wearing the same suit for more than about 2/3 years owing to changes in style/fashion (end of trouser girth etc.). If you're buying for work buy 2 pairs of trousers, as they wear out quicker than the jacket. And stick to black / pinstripe. Navy / grey suits always run the risk of 'culchie sunday best' syndrome, unless you get a really, really good one.

M&S - great selection. Good quality. If they don't have your size in, they'll order it in for next day pick up in any of their shops.
    Can't really go wrong!
