    Help please...

Im trying to connect to a wireless network using my sisters Sony Vaio laptop.
I have set the following settings

    IP address
    192.168.1.5
    Subnet Mask
    255.255.255.0
    Default gateway
    192.168.1.254

    Primary DNS
    87.232.1.40
    Alternate DNS
    87.232.1.41

The icon in the systray displays as connected but attempting to connect to any webpages fails.

I am unable to ping either dns server or the router.

Also...on my own laptop, I am able to connect with standard network setting (auto IP & dns etc). this doesn't work on the Sony.

    Any help is appreciated

    Cheers
    S

Try and connect having been assigned an IP address by DHCP first.

Make sure the router is broadcasting the SSID and connect to it. You can temporarily turn off encryption until you manage to connect. Then enable WPA encryption.
