If you want Air Conditioning, you'll have to go for a Corolla Luna D-4D which will cost you just under 27k. a base model Avensis D-4D is just over 31k.
While the Avensis is only 3 inches longer than the Corolla, the Avensis has a better use of space. Leg room is far better in the Avensis, and because the Corolla's body tapers inwards at the glass area, the cabin isn't as wide as the Avensis, despite bring the same width mirror to mirror.
I've had both, and the Corolla is a very capable car. The 1.4 D-4D is quite good, and the model has some rarity value. The downside of this is that they're next to impossible to get, so dealers will be holding out for god margins. You can get a bigger discount on the Avensis, as supply is easier.

The Avensis comes with 125 bhp and 6 speed as standard, they also get traction control and stability control, which the Corolla doesn't.

The fairest models to compare like with like are the Corolla D-4D Luna, and the Avensis D-4D Strata, the Corolla gaining only leather steering wheel and gearknob over the Avensis. otherwise, equipment is pretty much identical. price difference of around 5500

thanks for info,is there much difference in fuel consumption, i do about 15k to 20k per year. the new 07 corolla looks nice but is the 1.4 D4D powerful enough for the size of the body [nearly as big as the avensis].

I might wait until 08 as the corolla luna seem to be impossible to get at the moment. Aircon is a must.
