Just curious, did you understand the question?

There are also political societies. If you're interested in politics and a strong supporter of a political party then you can join.

Well tbh anyone can join. None of the political parties are too choosy about their membership. Every euro counts!

I might join the Fianna Fail one, as I said to begrudge Sinn Feiners.

About the Outreach one, is that defunct or still going on? I'll do it if it's still there all right.

Join YFG. Debating, socialising, and we hate Sinn Fein more than anyone. If you want to keep SF out, Fine gael are the ones to bet on.
But of course if you dont like Fine Gael, it would be pointless to join.

The most productive society and eventfull group is the jazz society. Covers jazz, blues, traditional poklish music, and swing dancing! Fantastic group of people. The most cliqueless group on campus.

Game soc is also very socialible. If you think you arent into games, one word, "werewolf".

Game Soc?? Are these people who play Video Games or Playstations or Warcraft games for hours upon hours and have nothing better to do???

    ............OR.

Is there anything else to it?

Nothing better to do, gotta love it. No, people do those things because they enjoy them. There are things you are interested in and tihngs you're not. For everything that you're not into, it falls into the nothing better to do category. You'll go far in life.

Back on topic, anyone have anything else to say, I'm pretty certain on the ones I've picked so far which saves me time cum Freshers Week.

    1. Outreach
    2. World Aid
    3. Caving
    4. Mountaineering

I'd like to know more about the above if possible, they're really good clubs and societies and I checked their own individual websites and they have things going on all the tyme there which doesn't make it redundant I suppose.

EDIT: Should you do a maths degree/math sciences degree to join the Math Soc, I'll be doing Pharmacology.....???????????????????

I always prefered the clubs to be honest for making friends just basicly because most of them meet about 3 or 4 times a week. Like I loved the Rowing Club but I just couldn't commit 3 nights a week plus weekends, but spending that much time with people, you really do start to enjoy it. Plus it makes you so healthy :)

Also many of the clubs (like Hockey and rowing) you have to pay an extra €50 to get into the league and some require you to buy some equipment after a while so the €10 you pay initially won't be it for the year. But sports clubs are well worth the dough

And lastly, try and find out what days the training is on for sports. You're screwed if caving and mountaineering are on the same day (just going by example, but I'm sure they're not as lots are in both)

As the auditor (head / president) of the Games society, I take offence at that (not really). We play lots of games, board games, card games, computer games, everything. The "werewolf" mentioned further up is a game for 8 - 20 players, that everyone I've ever seen play it has enjoyed. We have parties, and such, and we're going to be doing paintball this year too. Also, we have this. Head over to the stand in fresher's week and I can answer any questions you might have.

As regards the Outreach society, I was a member of that in first year and it was great. Despite some minor dificulties with a few things, I'd definately recomend it. I'm pretty sure it's still going. Basically, you'd head out every tuesday night to give free grinds in Leaving Cert subjects to students in underprivilaged schools.

This is their website, if you still can't access it: http://www.ucd.ie/outreachsoc/

I had to give it up when I became Gamesoc's treasurer last year, between that and more work from college, I didn't have the time. I'd have gone back if I had.

Yeah sure they can. Though supporting a political party and a interest in politics are primary motivating factors for people joining the political parties.

Kaptain Redeye: The name has been unchanged since the foundation of the cumann in 1957. The website carries further information on the history of the cumann.

Ok. Just making sure you didnt understand the question.

The question was about Irish grammar. It wasnt are you sure the name is KBC, it was, shouldnt that be CKB if those naming it knew anything about irish grammar.

    UCD ArtsSoc.

Arts Soc is coming back this year (pending recognition).... its promising to be one of the biggest and best on campus.

This year we are taking over the running of Arts Day, Arts Ball and some things were keeping under our hats until September. Weve added our own twist to each of these events so expect something a bit different from what you've seen before.

Anyone with questions can email arts_soc@hotmail.com

Artsoc has alot of potential. It is going to be organised by some very nice and pro-active people.

The mountaineering club is very good. To get into it though, you must be prepared to spend circa €200 on your own gear. Worth every penny, IMO.

Basically, Chakar, he's just making the point that if you think of the KBC as a 'cumann' and not a 'branch', then by Irish word ordering it would be the "Cumann Kevin Barry".

I think, Kap, it's safe to assume that because FF calls all of its branches 'cumann', they've taken it to be an anglicised word justifying 'Kevin Barry Cumann' rather than having it as 'an Chumann Caoimhín de Bharra'.

Does no-one know if the Outreach Society has been defunct or what, anyone in it?

Is there not a Poker Society. I know that TCD have one and I'm sure a lot of people play it in UCD, I do anyway...?

Yep, we have a poker society. They regularly take over the student centre for their games.

how can an ArtsSoc cope with satisfying the wants of so many arts students?

there would have to be many sub-committees with little central control so eventually they will all just divide themselves up as some areas will get more of the grant than others and it will be realised that you could get more money as an independent small society...

i would imagine that more will have to be done for your members than organising the Arts Day and the Arts Ball...

thats not really true, the only thing you have to, have to have with the mountaineers is hiking boots if your a hiker but you can wear runners on the beginneers hike.

But the club has a huge gear pool of harnesses, ropes etc and other such stuff that you really can build up your own bits of gear slowly.
Climbing shoes are a fantastic investment should you really get into the climbing side of things.

Of course all the gear is worth it, most defo and if you get into caving and mountaineering you may well becoming addicted to wanting new gear, its happened to us all!! :D

Lucas I posted on the first page about us wonderful mountaineers, if ya want to know anything email the club gmail, twill be me answering ya!

How very clever of you Chakar. Well done.

æquinoctium, I would imagine that Arts Soc is going to be something along the lines of Law Soc (minus the debating), Q Soc, B&L, C&E etc. in that it will primarily be a socialising society, specialising in night events and that kind of thing and centered specifically in the Arts Block, with emphasis on fostering a sense of community between Arts Students, but not at the exclusion of the rest of the University.

There are other societies which deal with the more specialised aspects to people's hobbies and interests in UCD - the small societies.

Don't touch the UCD poker games with a 10 foot barge pole.

Will probably get shot for this in this forum but the C&E are worth joining purely for the concessions you get with their membership card.

This year I got 2 for 1 on pretty much everything in TGI Fridays, Go Large for Free in Supermacs on Fosters Avenue, and all the usual nightclub concessions.

    Easily made back the €2.

I never thought of it like that and just remembered I was involved in Cumann Chorcai... good work OP for showing the badness of them grammer

And there's really regular games of Poker. Done with buy in's. There;s something for everyone and if not then you can set it up. Someone's setting up a UFO soc next year

I made back the €2 in B&L and Law soc pizza's. Mmm I was sick at the end of the week of pizza

Rubbish society but if you're a bag whore its the one to join, but do so early in the week cause the bags have less and less stuff as the week goes on as they start to run out.

Erm......something like that shouldn't just be UFO's, it should include other supernatural phenomena......calling it the Paranormal Society. Just a thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,173 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

Well that might make sense except for the fact UFOs have nothing to do with the supernatural or paranomal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 667 ✭✭✭aequinoctium

this ArtsSoc will require so much funding especially if it is about socialising - providing refreshments and most likely booking rooms etc for the events
