Some encouraging performances from Irish athletes tonight. I'm sorry I haven't the exact time but here goes:

Paul Hession at last breaks Irish record and qualifies for the Worlds in the 200m with 20.44 (+1.4) taking many scalps including that of Marlon Devenish in the process.

Joanne Cuddihy 3rd in 400m from Lane 1 in around 51.5

Fionnuala Britton 5th in 3000m steeplechase in under 9.48

Mary Cullen 3rd in 3000m in around 8.42.

As well as Hession, Cullen and Britton's times were PBs, while Cuddihy ran an SB

20.44 from lane 2 in those conditions (a plus wind reading is not always good in the 200m) is very impressive, not a huge distance behind the 3rd fastest of all time. Bend was very good as was his finish.

20.44 is some performance and judging how far all other sprinters where off their normal standard he can definitely go faster. The 200m is the hottest event at the moment and the fact he is mixing it with the big boys is very impressive.

Just to add, this is inside the A standard for Osaka. It's great that we now have two world class steeplechasers!!
