Today i was a little strapped for cash when goin into town with some mates, so i thought id trade in Casino Royale on BluRay, maybe get €10 for a Subway. I go into Gamestop, hand it over and i was offered €3.80 credit, or €2 cash. What the **** is that? For a BluRay disc.

Also last week i went to trade UEFA CL 06/07 (3 months old) and Burnout Revenge and was offered €25 cash.

It must be the numbers in games they are getting in. Anyone else suffer from this problem?

didn't casino royale come free with something? if so its pretty worthless...

I got mine free for being on the the first however many thousand people to sign up for PSN, but they are selling it for €31.99 new.

I'd always try to sell games/movies in the Buy and Sell, adverts.ie or whathaveyou. You'll get more for it and the person who buys it will, more often than not, be getting it at a better price than in those bricks and mortar money-traps.

yeah gamestop aint the best, esp for DVDs, but they're the only place that do take them

trade-in value is based on how much of a game they have (so FIFA '07 will get you next to nothing compared to what you originally paid) and how much they can sell it second hand for, at a good profit.

casino royale is in the hands of most PS3 owners who signed up for PSN at the start, so they can't expect to shift stock of that title, so they offer you nada to disuede you from giving them what essentially becomes stock room filler for them...

UEFA, FIFA, PES and other such yearly updated games get very little too, because a few months down the line no one cares because there's a new version out. the store i work in has loads of FIFA 04 still sitting there, and it costs about €5 too!

Anything that comes free with something has its value reduced as a result

The PS3 one isn't even in a proper sized Bluray box.

Its not that surprising that that is all you were offered for it.

i had to replace my 360 lately and the only one the store had in stock was the bundle that came with smackdown 2007 in the box, fine says i,already own it so can trade it in, brought it to game to exchange for the darkness, 9 euro i was offered, granted its been out a while but 9 EURO! its in the pre-owned section for 34.95!!!! ive never traded a game in before and ill never do it again, i tend to keep games for years and play them on a whim anyway

I was in gamestop the other day. brought in 6 titles and was going to trade a few in and take advantage of the 9.99 offer. No such luck. I brought in

    Superman Returns
    Lost Planet
    Tony Hawks Project 8
    Crackdown
and 2 others I cant remember.
I was told that I couldnt trade them in cause they didnt meet the minimum value requirement.
2 of them have to meet 40 Euros. Which is madness. Cause the only games you are going to get a score each for are going to be about a week old.
In the end I traded in 5 games to get Overlord. Madness. On the way out I was looking at the games they were only giving me a fiver for and they were selling them for 30 and 40 quid!
Thats the end of my trade in adventures with Gamestop. I wonder if Game are anyuse? Ive been told that Xtravision give the best rates.

    Ooh... nasty!

Like I said in my earlier post, you possibly could have sold them yourself for €20 each. Which means, of course, that someone wanting these 2 games could have got them for €40 instead of €70.

It's just unfortunate that people are helping these rip-off merchants increase their profits by accepting, sometimes, the insultingly low prices that are offered by game stores. IIRC it's the selling of second hand games that is the most profitable source of revenue for these companies.

Sure you think that bads I went into all the stores (Game, Xtravsion and Gamestop) with a BRAND NEW UNOPENED Splinter Cell Double Agent for the 360 and the most I got was €16 store credit or €12 cash in Game. Gamestop offered me €8 I told her to F off that is redicoulous €8 for a brand new game still with the wrapper on it, that they are going to slap stickers on and sell it for €50 or so. Saying that though I can only get €15 on Adverts and that's meant to be much better

Trade ins have never been fair tbh.

Also to those who have new games n wrappers.......would you not use your imagination and say it's an unwanted present  It's worked for me loads of times.........although i never do it in the same shop within the same month.

I've been tempted to snap the game in front of the staff member just to show them what I think of the price they've offered me (and 'no' I don't think I could kill a man :D ). I won't do it because it would be impolite and wouldn't achieve anything - but it's just annoying.

I went to Gamestop yesterday and traded in three games... got E38 for The Darkness, E15 for Saints Row and E6 for PES 6... I thought it was pretty decent besides PES 6

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,475 ✭✭✭corblimey

In Gamestop at the weekend, I traded in Tomb Raider Legend and Pro Evo 6 for Darkness for a tenner (and I'd just got TRL the week before for 20 sods pre-owned in Game - pure muck), so I'm happy with that value

(plus I got Simcity DS for trading in 2 DS games a couple weeks ago that I had failed to sell on adverts.ie)

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,267 ✭✭✭mcgovern

I traded in Condemned (€23.49 on play.com) and Prey (€15.49 on play.com) on the 360 in Smyths last nite and got The Darkness for free.
They refused Football Manager 2006 and CoD2 for the deal but I'm not too bothered about that =)

Edit: Had the PC Price for Condemned down

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

bombidol, try Smyths. I traded in 2 games there for a straight swap for a new one, and one of the games was Table Tennis!
I'm not sure if they're still doing the offer but it's worth checking.

I hate when people trade in games to us (work in X/Vision) always feel like ****e offering people **** money for good games, wouldnt be able to work in Gamestop ! But to the poster with the sealed Splinter Cell, I know how you feel but regardless, it is still pre-owned, just means whoever buys it gets lucky ...

you can't trade in PC games anywhere, boooo

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

^ because you can copy them to your hardrive and dont need the disc anymore, youd never need to keep a game again

I agree - you've got to remember that the shop are giving you a price well below the price they believe the game to be worth, so if you're looking to maximise your own profit you need to sell it yourself.

Of course, for many the few euro you lose on a trade in is worth the hassle you save in posting ads and organising post etc.

As projectmayhem points out, the system in place doesn't just take the age of a game into account, it takes the amount of stock into account too.

When I first worked in Game the system was based on a matrix of prices - you scan the game, get the RRP for it new and then check the grid to see what price you can offer and what price you will then sell it for. There were regularly updated exceptions, such as FIFA, the annual WWE games etc. which always got way lower than another similarly priced game.

Shortly before I left they had automated the system, and that automatically checks how many other copies the store (and company) has Pre-owned. I think someone told me that it drops the trade in value a certain degree for every 10 copies in stock, or something.

It's a better system for the shop because they don't get lumbered with 100s of copies of a terrible game that just happened to have a high price. Anything that's good for the profits of a shop in this way are probably not going to be good for the consumer, however.

If you want more, buy and sell is your friend.

Gamestop really take the piss. Example - old xbox games. Granted the system is on the way out, but with the amount of people who still own the original machine plus people getting the 360, there is bound to be a buck in it for awhile yet. What do Gamestop offer for xbox games?

80 Cent. Every Game. No Exceptions.

Then they sell them back out for like 17.99?! What?! And thats THEIR money, THEIR 17.99...and they're always trying to get you to buy their stuff, which would be fine if it were cheaper. But jesus, have you seen the prices for the DS games? Most of them are about 34.99? Sometimes their stuff is like a fiver cheaper. I'd hate the bastards to death if i didn't actually work for them. Which i do =/ hell has a special place for me.

xtra-vision recently lowered their pricing structure on xbox games. you usually get about €1, for good games €3 trade-in, and no cash value at all. they're not quite that expensive to buy, but there's still a huge mark-up...

Sometimes you buy a new game the case isn't sealed in cling film.

Is it possible for a customer to buy a new game and the store gives them a pre-owned game as you couldn't tell the difference?

Obviously, no store tags on the box you get

nah. unless the store has it's traded games right beside it's new games and the staff are complete retards, it really won't happen.

sometimes there's no plastic around them because they use the case on the shop floor, and sometimes publishers/distributers just don't send a batch with plastic...

sure it's the disc that matters, not the plastic around it

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

ill NEVER buy a preowned 360 game because the thing is too damn picky about the condition of the discs, the slightest scratch and itll refure to play it, plus preowned prices are a complete rip off, 45 quid for a 2nd hand game? yeah right, pay the extra 10-15 quid and get the brand new one
