Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

PC sooooo slow !

My relatively new PC (18 months old) emachine 160GB 512mb is incredibly slow to load up (approx 12-15 minutes).
What can I do to improve this performance?0

Hello Culchie, I'm pretty sure I found why your PC is so slow. You are using two anti-virus programs which is a bad bad idea and should explain your PC speed. You have AVG anti-virus and Norton Internet Security. This can lead to conflicts and many other problems.
Norton Internet Security is a resource hog and not very good protection, so I recommend uninstalling that. However it is up to you. Make sure you uninstall one of these programs
If you want to uninstall Norton follow the instructions in the link. You need to do it this way or else it won't uninstall properly

If you want to uninstall AVG anti-virus do this
Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Remove Grisoft/AVG

ActorSeeksJob got it in one. I cant see anything suspicous at a quick glance. Norton AV slows up a PC on its own, but putting another AV beside it will slow things even more. I dont recommend either AV personally - I suggest purchasing NOD32. Student Rates for the software are available, cant recall the price tho.
Edit: I noticed several Poker applications. Some of these *may* contain spyware, further slowing down a PC. Did you install these yourself?0 -
Yeah a lot of those poker things contain some mild spyware, but generally are best ignored since the user always installs it themselves.
I think the problem is only due to the two anti-viruses running in real-time, and the fact that the user has a LOAD of needless start up entries that should be disabled.
Culchie tell me if you want me to list the start up entries that are safe to disable, it will make a huge difference.0 -

Startup items will affect when it starts up, but most sit idely once loaded.
Spyware should always be removed from a system, and shouldnt be ignored. I dont think it will remove the application - just the crap.
I agree the bulk of the problem is to AVs - but in the long run, removing spyware helps to

Actually you are wrong about this. Most people don't fix any poker related stuff as they are at best an optional fix, are quite harmless, and are required if the user wants to play poker. They will just keep coming back over and over if you fix them. Spyware isn't the reason for his PC being slow anyway.Spyware should always be removed from a system, and shouldnt be ignored. A spyware scanner removes pretty much all spyware detected. Poker applications may ADD spyware, but may not keep adding it.
All im saying is that Spyware is also a cause of slowness, and I suggest in the long run removing spyware from the PC - no matter how small.
