Smart Wireless set up

I have broadband with Smart and have a wired setup with an Aolynk DR814 router. The trouble is, I have a wire trailing from the kitchen to the computer along the floor (10 metres). I promised the Mrs. that it was only temporary and that was a full year ago. Now, even I am getting ticked off tripping over it!

My question whether I can get a wireless router to replace the Smart one (without giving Smart Telecom €140 for the privelage) or set up an 'Access Point' (if that is the correct term) coupled with the router I already have. The wired setup to date is 100% perfectly reliable (fair play, Smart) and I don't want to jeopardise that.

    Anyone?

    Tom...

I take it the 10 m cable is a patch cable? You could go the wireless route or buy a kit of adapters you plug into your electrical outlets [one by the router, the other by your PC]. It uses your electrical network in your house for networking your data. This would do the job.

What's Smart's policy regarding editing the settings on the router? Is the router their property? Here's a good replacement router.

Any wireless adsl2 modem/router will work no problem with Smart - just put in your usual Smart password and username. Or you can use a wireless router with the Aolynk 814 - you will have to put the Aolynk into bridge mode - full intructions on the Smart support forum.

    Examples: modem/routers - http://netgear.co.uk/home_wireless_broadband_routers.php

wireless routers (to use with the Aolynk) http://netgear.co.uk/home_wireless_cable_routers.php

Dont forget you will need a wireless card or wireless usb dongle for the pc.

Thanks for the responses. Netgear seems to be a popular brand name for routers, a bit expensive though as I was hoping to pick up something a little cheaper than what Smart are offering at €140.

I found a Dabsvalue router at: http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=311B, which had good reviews. Would this work with any configuration (i.e. with or without coupling to the current router) at home for me?

I especially like the dLan plug-in kit - very nice. I may go down that road if the above router doesn't do the job.

    Cheers,

If it's an ADSL router, it should be just fine [independent of your current router] as long as you have the settings you need.
