Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Monitors & eye strain

Are there any types of monitor which are shown to reduce eye strain?

Are flat screen/TFT monitors any better in this matter than the old CRT monitors?

    Thanks

Flatscreen/TFT are better for your eyes as there's no glare off them...

As per standard, if in a work place and you have a crt monitor if you contact hr/IT they should have to replace it with a flatscreen if you're having trouble with your eyes. (euro regs)

Also you should stare blankly into spare every hour or so for a couple of minutes...
Ie stare, but look through everything, keeping your eyes unfocused..
this relaxes the muscles in your eyes therefore reducing strain on them.

Its not just "glare", TFT's have no flicker - the image on a TFT/LCD screen is updated whenever it changes, whereas with a CRT it is updated several times per second, depending on the refresh rate in use. If this is low (e.g. 60Hz) there is a noticeable flicker from the screen, which plays havoc with my eyes.

Yes, CRTs are bad for eye strain and LCD flat screens are widely known to be vastly better in this regard.

One important factor to bear in mind in mind is that an LCD monitor typically has a far greater (2x to 3x) brightness than a CRT. Obviously it can be adjusted to suit but a lot of people don't do this.

As Stephen points out the refresh rate is usually the problem with a CRT. Many people don't seem to notice that they have theirs set to 60Hz. I will go out of my way to avoid using CRT's unless absolutely necessary.
