I know it's been said before but I think Eric Clapton's - Wonderful Tonight is beautiful, it's my first choice.

And Celine Dion - Because you loved me would be my number 2.

And my third would be Elton John - Can You Feel the Love Tonight.

I think Damien Dempsey does a cracking version of the Pogues "Rainy Night in Soho" on his new album - love the words especially the opening "I've been loving you a longtime, down all the years down all the days"... but my OH thinks Shane McGowan wrote it about someone who had died?

Can't find any info on it tho if anyone could shed some light? ... just afraid to upset anyone...

Shane wrote the song about his girlfriend, who is now his fiancee... the lyrics "sometimes i wake up in the morning, the ginger lady by my bed" thats his fiancee... she has ginger hair, so there's no hidden meaning... pretty straight forward... and an absolutely crackin song... i love it... damo's version too

Someone posted Barry White - You're The First The Last My Everything and it has been ages since I heard the song. It really is a great first dance song. Nice and uplifting.

    Hi,
Getting married in a few months and cant think of a good song for the first dance. We dont have "a song" so any suggestions welcome. HJS

It doesn't have to be 'a song' - just one you both like. Every couple has one of those! Who cares if you can't dance to it - you won't be dancing properly anyway!!

    Hi,
Just found this again. Yeah we eventually went with "You do something to me" by Paul Weller in the end with the band. It was perfect. The DJ played Better by Tom Baxter so we had both.

Rage Against the Machine - Fu*ck u I won't do what you tell me.

It's actually called "Killing in the Name".

    Other good choices would be

Prodigy - "Smack My Bitch Up"
    and Elbow "Grounds for Divorce"

The Cure is always a crowd pleaser. We went for an instrumental by Gustavo Santoalalla called "Gaucho" partly because we had a lot of happy memories with the song but also because I was worried my cousin who is a scoffing music junkie would have laughed at any of my choices with words :S

Worked out well in the end.

    NICK CAVE-- The Ship Song..

    Baby, I love you - Ronettes/Ramones (cover)

God only knows - The Beach Boys

Into my arms - Nick Cave

I am thinking of compliing some background 'lurve' music while people are eating. Looking more at indie/alternative/rock rather than Celine et al.

    Keep the suggestions coming!

We're going for Andy Williams 'Moon river', I just love that song!

When I was lil, I loved the song 'I am a man that will fight for your honour' that was in the film Karate kid and always thought that'd be my wedding song.
Thankfully I've grown out of that idea :o:o:D

The Nick Cave one is particularly good if one person in the couple is into God, and one isn't.

Otherwise on the request for decent lurrve or sloppy songs for background music, off the top of me head:

Paul Weller : "You do something to me"
Super Furry Animals: "Fire in my heart"
Elbow : "One day like this"
    Scott Matthews : "Elusive"
    Nick Drake : "Northern Sky"
    Blur : "Tender"
The Troggs : "With a girl like you"
The Flaming Lips : "Do you realise"
    Spiritualised : "Stay with me"

Umm..... Shane McGowan's fiancee is Victoria Mary Clarke (write for the Sunday Indo) has black black hair. I've heard the ginger lady referred to as "whiskey" or "heroin". The song was written for her though
It is a crackin tune though, not sure which version I prefer...

Ya have to admit when I heard it I thought he had woken up next to a bottle of Jamesons..

Still love it though - that's my song ... Damien is a class act, even better live..

Yeah, would go with the booze/drug interpretation myself. He's singing about a perfect moment that's past. Tis more of an end of relationship song-absolutely love it though. However, most people don't think about lyrics that closely and probably won't notice.

Thinking about Past the Point of Rescue meself
