Will a q6600 be a lot faster than an e6850 when encoding dvds etc to mkv(x264)?

Im planning to build a pc soon enough and am just wondering does anyone know what difference there will be between an e6750/e6850 and a q6600 when encoding dvds to mkv(x264)/avi. Would there be a big speed difference?

This depends entirely on how many threads the software you are using to do the encoding can support., and also how effective it is at Multithreading if supported.

Most video encoders have good support for multithreading so assuming the one you're using does it should be a good deal faster.

The answer is yes the Q6600 would be faster if using x264 with MeGUI or AutoMKV as they use multi-threading of x264 to good effect at stock speeds.

It gets even faster if you overclock it to 3Ghz which is very easy with Q6600 though get a good CPU cooler for it.

Some benchmarks here entries in black are at stock speeds, red overclocked. Just for reference jobs that took 6-9 hours on my last box only take 2-4 now (Q6600 at 3Ghz).

Edit: Actually not sure about AutoMKV haven't used it in while but will test later to see if multi-threading is turned on, it definitely is in MeGUI and XviD4PSP the other x264 UI despite the name it has generic PC profiles that are worth using.
