Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

When I get a machine thats a slow starter I usually start by disabling the startup group.

    Start > Run > MSCONFIG
Disable the startup group by unticking it's selector. Now try a restart and see if it's any better. Print out the hijack this log then and we can see what might be causing it to be slow. Alternatively go to the list view and disable everything but AVG. Most of that stuff isn't needed, Adobe reader, iPod service etc.

Are there a lot of programs starting in the system tray by the way ? Actually I've just noticed you're using PCAngel, it could be causing problems too.

Your HijackThis log is clean, doesn't seem to be any malware. Usually a slow PC can be down to some conflicts, eg : the person running two firewalls or two anti-virus programs. Your friend is using AVG firewall, so make sure he has the Windows Firewall turned off.

Few things we can do :

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Extra Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so. Also, it may happen that your Antivirus flags DSS as suspicious. Please allow the Deckard's System Scanner to run and don't let your Antivirus delete it. (In this case, it may be better to temporary disable your Antivirus)

    Download GMER from here:
    http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

    Unzip it to the desktop.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
    Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases

        [*]Click OK
[*]Now under select a target to scan:
          Select
        My Computer

[*]This will program will start and scan your system.
[*]The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
[*]Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
        • Now click on the Save as Text button:
[*]Save the file to your desktop.
[*]Copy and paste that information in your next post.

So post the following in your next reply : the two DSS texts in full, the GMER results, and the Kaspersky Webscanner report.

Also pop it open and take the fan off the heat sink and give both a good cleaning. I had a machine in recently what was so clogged it kept shutting itself down. Apart from some minor spyware it was clean.

Laptops are expecially prone to heat sink blockage but workstations left under desks get pretty grimy too.

Also disabling those unnecessary start up apps is a good idea and see if the hard drive needs defragging.
